Martineau Scores Late to Give Field Hockey Victory Over Panthers

NORTHAMPTON, Mass - Senior Emma Martineau scored off a pass from senior Rylie Turner in the 66th minute to lead the University of Maine at Farmington (1-1) field hockey to a 1-0 victory of Plymouth St (0-2) in the consolation game of the Smith College Caryl Newhof Tournament.  Freshman Grace DiMarco recorded her first career shutout, making one save on the day.  Senior Torrie Nightingale was named to the All-Tournament team.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Both teams had nine shots total with UMF holding a 6-1 shot on goal advantage
  • Plymouth St. had 8 penalty corners to UMF's 3
  • Plymouth St. recorded five saves and UMF saved one

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team was able to score in the first half, UMF held an advantage in shots 5-3
  • PSU held an advantage in shots (6) and penalty corners (7) but was unable to get a shot on goal.
  • The goal by Marineau was her first on the year and the 14th of her career.
  • Kyla Sturtevant entered the ball into the circle finding Turner who found Martineau open on the left post.  Martineau beat the goalie scoring inside the right post for the game-winner.

COMMENTS FROM COACH PRATT

"We rebounded from a difficult loss yesterday (5-1 to Smith College), and played a complete game today.  The team played together for 70 minutes."

WHAT'S NEXT

UMF returns to action in a non-conference match-up with the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday, September 4th at 4 pm.  The game will be played home on Prescott Field.
