Box Score FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington scored the final 12 points of the game to lift the Beavers to a 57-53 victory over Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action today at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers (10-12 overall, 6-6 in NAC) are scheduled visit Husson University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Badgers (6-16, 3-9) are slated to host Castleton State College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
After a 4-3 lead, the Beavers trailed for a majority of the contest until a 12-0 run over the final 4:58 helped the hosts take the victory away from the Badgers. DJ Gerrish (Rumford, Maine) canned a 3-pointer with 1:43 left in the game to give Farmington a 55-53 lead. Johnson State had a pair of empty trips before Danny Kane (Bradford, Maine) sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining for the 57-53 final.
Gerrish -- one of five seniors for Farmington honored in their final home game -- led the Beavers with 14 points, while classmate Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine) added 11 points, including four to kick off the game-winning run. Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) supplied nine points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in the win.
Andy Bousono (Philadelphia, Pa.) led Johnson State with 14 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers, while Billy Boyd (Hardwick, Vt.) chipped in 12 points. Bousono scored eight points in the opening half to help the Badgers out to a 26-19 lead at intermission.
Johnson State led 12-11 with 8:47 left in the first half before the Badgers scored the game's next eight points and held the Beavers without a field goal for nearly five minutes to take a 20-11 lead with 5:51 until intermission. Bousono and Ian Passino (Peru, N.Y.) each hit a three in the stretch. Johnson State pushed the lead to 24-13 before settling into the half with a 26-19 advantage.
Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Badgers outscored Farmington 19-13 to expand their lead to 45-23. Five points from Bousono and four each by Boyd and Passino helped the visitors to the 13-point cushion.
Headed by five points from Gerrish, a 10-1 Farmington flurry got the Beavers to 46-42 with 7:43 remaining, but the Badgers staved off the hosts to push the lead back to 53-43 with pair of Rob Key (New Britain, Conn.) free throws with 5:04 remaining. Key's shots turned out to be the final points for the Badgers.
Dean scored on layup with 4:52 left to ignite the 12-0 stretch for the Beavers with a hoop-and-harm for Johnson at 2:30 cutting the deficit to 53-52.
After a Bousono miss, Gerrish knocked down a 3-pointer to forge the Beavers' first lead of the second half at 55-53 with 1:43 remaining. Kane cashed in a pair of freebies to seal the victory for Farmington at 57-53.
