Four reach double figures as UMF tops Lyndon

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team boosted its North Atlantic Conference record to 6-0 as the Beavers dispatched Lyndon State College 86-65 this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

UMF (6-4 overall) is scheduled to visit Maine Maritime Academy Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Hornets remained winless at 0-10 (0-4 NAC) with Castleton State College at home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) paced the Beavers with 20 points and 13 boards, while Nate Carson (Orrington, Maine) supplied a career-high 19 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) with 16 points and Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) with 10 points also reached double figures scoring for the Beavers. Dan Kane (Bradford, Maine) handed out seven assists in the win, while Carson provided six assists.

UMF led from Leary's ice-breaking 3-pointer to the 86-65 final and appeared in control of the game with a Carson three giving the hosts a 58-39 advantage with 14:41 left in the game, but the Hornets ran off on a 15-2 stretch to draw the visitors to 60-54 with 9:48 to play. The Beavers held a 71-62 lead with 6:33 to play when Carson buried 3-pointers on back-to-back trips to ignite a 10-0 fire to put UMF in command at 81-62.

Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) and Asa Smith (Cheltenham, Md.) netted 13 points apiece for Lyndon, which also received 10 points from Devyn Baranauskas (Waterbury, Conn.). Smith scored six points and Baranauskas pitched in four points during the Hornets' rally from a 19-point deficit.

Smith also grabbed eight rebounds, but the Hornets were outrebounded 53-27. Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) snared eight boards for UMF.
