Sumner, Beavers notch NAC victory at Lyndon

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. -- Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) scored 19 points as the University of Maine at Farmington defeated Lyndon State College 77-64 in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action tonight at Stannard Gymnasium.

The Beavers (14-8 overall, 13-2 NAC) are scheduled to visit Johnson State College Saturday at 3 p.m.

Joe McCloskey (Howland, Maine) contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers, while Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) had 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Dan Kane (Bradford, Maine) scored 12 points and dished out five assists in the win and Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) tallied 11 points in the win.

The Beavers connected on 24 of their free-throw attempts, including a 10-for-10 performance by Kane.

Steve Gantt tossed in 18 points and had two steals for Lyndon (4-17, 4-10) and Jason Gray collected a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Sackett had 12 points in the loss while teammate Devyn Baranauskas added 10 points and five assists.

The Hornets led 40-38 at intermission and scored the first five points of the second half to take a 45-38 lead on a Gray three with 17:59 remaining. The Beavers followed with seven straight points, capped by a Sumner trifecta to even the score at 45-45 with 16:15 left in the game. After four ties, UMF claimed a 56-51 advantage with 12 minutes to go on two Kane free throws and a McCloskey triple.

Leading 62-57, the Beavers pulled away from Lyndon with a 9-0 run -- headlined by five points by Sumner -- to push the lead to 71-57 with 3:42 left in the contest. Lyndon got the deficit down to 73-64, but UMF made four of six foul shots over the final 1:21 to finish off the 77-64 win.
