WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team traveled to Worcester this evening to play the eighth ranked Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Beavers would drop their first game of the season 67-46.
The game opened up all Engineers. The Beavers scored the first bucket of the game, a Kyle Donlin (Warren, Maine) layup. The Engineers would then go on a 21-0 run over the next nine minutes to take a 19 point lead and suddenly the Beavers were in a hole.
The Beavers would respond with a 15-3 run of their own to pull within seven with 2:53 left to play before halftime. The Engineers would once again respond and close out the final 2:53 on an 11-2 run to take a 16 point lead into halftime.Â
Despite a valiant effort from the Beavers in the second half, they couldn't cut the Engineers lead to under 10.Â
The Beavers struggled shooting the ball throughout the game, shooting 32.7% (17-52) from the field and 35% (7-20) from the three-point line. The Engineers were able to connect on 43.8% (28-64) of their shots and 29.2% (7-24) from three on the evening.Â
WPI played aggressive defense all evening, forcing 22 Beaver turnovers. The Beavers would turn the Engineers over 16 times.Â
Offensively, the Beavers were once again led by Terion Moss (Portland, Maine) who tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Donlin, who made his first start after suffering a season ending injury a year ago, chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers. Â
For the Engineers, they had four players tally at least 12 points. John Lowther (Hingham, Mass.) and Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, N.H.) each tallied 15 points while Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, Calif.) pitched in 13, and John Adams (Douglas, Mass.) had 12.
