BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Maine State Championships today at Saxl Park hosted by Husson University. The women's team took 7th place while the men's team brought home 5th place overall.
Women's Race
Joy Evans (Farmington, Maine) led the Beavers on the course today, placing 16th overall, finishing with a time of 23:40.6, which was nearly a two minute personal record and the 2nd fastest 6k time in UMF cross country history.
Sophomore Eve Poteet (Fairhill, Maryland) was the 2nd Beaver to cross the finish line, placing 61st overall with a time of 25:57.7. Poteet's time was a personal record by over a minute.
Junior Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine) placed just behind Poteet with a time of 26:16.8. MacDonald placed 66th overall, running an average mile time of 7:02.9.
Finishing behind Anna MacDonald was her sister Abigail MacDonald (Bangor, Maine), who placed 75th overall with a time of 27:41.5 with an average mile time of 7:25.6.
Sarah Chapin finished 88th overall in a time of 31:07.6 to round out the scoring for the Beavers. As a team, they finished with 197 points. Bates College placed 1st overall with 19 points and all three of the top finishers. Elizabeth Holcombe placed 1st overall with a time of 22:21.2 to win the individual title for Bates.
Men's Race
As a team, the men ran the 3rd fastest 8k average in program history. Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) was the first Beaver across the finish line, finishing with a time of 27:07.5 to place 18th overall. Castaldo ran an average mile time of 5:27.4.
James Riley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the next Beaver across the finish line, placing 36th overall. Riley finished with an average time of 27:43.4 with an average mile time of 5:34.6 and a personal record time.
Jimmy Reel (Nashua, N.H.), Luke Bliss (Underhill, Vermont), and Andrew LaFlamme (Nashua, N.H.) finished 40th, 41st, and 42nd respectively. Reel finished with a time of 27:52.8. Bliss finished in 27:53.4 and LaFlamme finished with an impressive time of 27:55.8.
Ethan Linscott (Lakeville, Maine) and Connor Freeman (Bath, Maine) finished right behind each other in 57th and 58th place. Linscott finished with a time of 28:30.6, and Freeman finished in 28:31.9. Linscott's time was a personal record.
Joe Burgess (Gray, Maine) PRed by nearly three minutes, with a time 32:19.5 and placinfg in 97th place.
The 5th place finish by the Beavers places them ahead of the 6th place finish they secured at the Maine State Championship a season ago.
