BRUNSWICK, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team traveled to Bowdoin College this afternoon and took down the Polar Bears, 65-56 in a non-conference battle. The victory for the Beavers marks the 3rd time in the past 26 years that the Beavers topped the Polar Bears.
The Beavers essentially led wire to wire to claim their 4th victory of the season. The Beavers trailed just once in the contest, 15-14 midway through the 1st half. After falling behind for the first time in the ballgame, the Beavers responded with a 14-5 run to open up an eight-point lead at 28-20. Junior forward Ethan Forrester (Colorado Springs, Colo.) sparked the Beavers run, tallying a pair of layups and a big three-pointer.
The Beavers were able to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. A Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) three-pointer on the first Beaver possession of the 2nd half quickly extended the Beaver lead to nine, the 2nd largest lead of the game for Farmington.
Consecutive buckets from Kevin Reeves cut the Polar Bear deficit back to five. Everytime the Polar Bears inched closer, the Beavers had an answer. After the Polar Bears got within five, Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine) hit a free throw and Forrester added a layup to extend the lead back to eight.
On the ensuing Polar Bear possession Michael Simonds drilled a three to get Bowdoin back within five. Griffin once again had an answer for the Beavers, hitting a three of his own to make it an eight-point game once again.
Sophomore forward Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.) had a strong 2nd half for the Beavers, totaling ten points and three rebounds on 4-7 shooting. Anthony scored seven straight points for the Beavers to help maintain an eight-point advantage with nine minutes to play.
The Polar Bears responded with a 6-0 scoring spurt to pull within just two with 6:51 left to play. A jumper from Brock Flagg (Brewer, Maine) and another three from Chadbourne helped the Beavers extend the lead back out to seven.
Another Simonds three cut the lead back to four with 4:39 left to play, but that is as close as the Polar Bears would get. The Beavers closed the game on a 15-10 scoring run to put the game away and pick up a big road win.
Forrester led the Beavers with 18 points on 8-10 shooting off the bench. Forrester also tallied five rebounds and knocked down a pair of triples. Anthony finished with 12 points and nine boards to narrowly miss on the double-double, Chadbourne and Griffin each tallied nine points for the Beavers.
