Softball Picks up 1st Win of the Season and Finish Off Myrtle Beach Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team picked up their 1st win of the season beating Cairn before falling in game two of their doubleheader to Concordia-Texas.

Game One

The Beavers fell behind early but scored 10 straight runs to grab their first victory of the season. The Highlanders got rolling early in the 1st inning as five of the first six hitters reached base. Adriana Shannon led off the single up the middle, stole 2nd, and moved up to 3rd on a single from Myiah Petroro. Jenna Kenyon then hit a single to right that scored both Shannon and Petroro. Theresa Beck followed with a triple into the left field corner to make it a 3-0 game with still nobody out. Kacey Wees singled to center making it a 4-0 game. Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) got Julia Bruestle to strikeout swinging and catcher Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) threw Wees out stealing to end the inning.

In the circle, Wees retired the first nine batters she faced. But the Beavers erupted their second time through the order. Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine) reached on an error and then Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) hit a ground ball that the Highlanders attempted to get the lead runner, but Merritt beat the throw to 2nd and everyone was safe. Allen followed with a single up the middle that allowed Merritt to score. Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) followed with a single that loaded the bases with one out. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) recorded an RBI groundout as Wilson and Allen moved up to 2nd and 3rd on the play. Taylor Veilleux (Belgrade, Maine) delivered an RBI single to bring the Beavers back within one at 4-3.

Schievink recorded a 1-2-3 5th to keep the momentum rolling for Farmington. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) hit a one-out single and then the Beavers started playing some small ball. Merritt bunted but beat it out for a single. Pike followed with a bunt single of her own but Merritt scored on an error to tie the game. The Beavers had 2nd and 3rd when Allen came up and ripped a one-out single to center that scored Merritt and Pike to give the Beavers their first lead of the game.

The Highlanders threatened in the top of the sixth having two runners on with two outs when the Beavers went to Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) to take over for Schievink. Martin got pinch hitter Katie Fauske to pop up and end the inning.

The Beavers tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the 6th. Pike delivered the big blow in the inning, a bases clearing double to left center. She then came around to score on a pop out to make it a 10-4 game.

Martin stranded a pair of runners in the top of the 7th to close out Cairn.

Pike and Allen each had two hits, Pike added four RBIs while Allen added three to lead the Beavers offensively. Schievink scattered seven hits and gave up four earned while striking out four in 5.2 innings to pick up the victory. Martin gave up one hit in 1.1 innings and recorded her 1st career save.

Game Two

The Beavers dropped game two at the hands of the Tornados, 3-0. Concordia grabbed a quick lead in the 1st inning. Grace Coleman ripped a one-out triple and Ellie Congalton hit a single to 2nd, but Coleman did not score. Congalton stole 2nd and Coleman scored on the throw to give Concordia a 1-0 lead. Beavers freshman pitcher Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) got Emily Moses to line into an inning ending double play.

With it still a one-run game, the Beavers had one of their best opportunities to score. Pike ripped a one-out single to left and then Wilson hit a single to right that moved Pike over to 3rd, giving the Beavers 1st and 3rd with two outs. Wilson was cut down trying to advance to 2nd to end the Beavers threat.

Martin worked around a lead-off walk to keep the Tornados scoreless in the bottom of the 5th. The Beavers had another great opportunity to score in the top of the 5th. Veilleux led off with a walk and moved over to 2nd on a SAC bunt from Chelsea Davis (Gray, Maine). Mackenzie Dyer (Hancock, Maine) singled to center giving the Beavers 1st and 2nd with just one out. Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) hit into a fielder's choice and Martin flew out to end the threat.

Concordia delivered a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 5ht when Mindy Matthews delivered an RBI double and Coleman followed with an RBI triple to make it a 3-0 game.

The Beavers had the lead off batter reach in the 7th but could not score.

Martin, Pike, Wilson, and Dyer each recorded hits for the Beavers. In the circle, Martin went 4.0 innings giving up just one run on two hits.
