GORHAM, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington dropped both ends of a doubleheader at the hands of the Southern Maine Huskies on Thursday afternoon in Gorham. The Beavers fell in game one 2-0 before dropping game two 9-1.
GAME ONE
Game one was very much a pitchers duel between Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) for the Beavers and Lauren Merrill for the Huskies.Â
In the bottom of the 1st inning, Schievink worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game scoreless. Schievink worked out of trouble again in the bottom of the 2nd inning stranding a pair of runners on base.
USM got on the board for the 1st time in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Madison Day opened the inning with a double but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. An error and a walk put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out for the Huskies. After Hannah Shields hit into a fielder's choice to record the 2nd out of the inning, Kendal Migliorini delivered a timely hit to score the 1st run of the game.Â
The Huskies tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 4th when Makena Mulcahy picked up an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Merrill was rolling early, going the first four innings of the game without surrendering a hit. Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) put an end to Merrill's no-hit bid with a single up the middle to lead off the 5th inning. Mackenzie Dyer (Hancock, Maine) singled up the middle later in the inning to give the Beavers runners on 1st and 2nd with just one out. But Merrill dug deep and retired the next two hitters to work out the potential trouble.Â
In the top of the 7th, Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) led off with a single to bring the tying run to the plate. Farmington was unable to get a timely hit in the inning as Merrill finished off the shutout.
Schievink went six innings giving up just two runs (one earned) while scattering ten hits and striking out one. Merrill went all seven innings giving up three hits and striking out nine to pick up her 6th win of the season. Lauren Miller and Mulcahy each recorded three hits for USM.
Game TwoÂ
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in game two, putting up six runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Belle Snyder picked up an RBI triple and came around to score on a wild pitch while Shields added a two-RBI single and Lexus McIntosh added an RBI single in the inning for USM
USM tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single from Snyder and an RBI double from Migliorin.Â
Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) got the Beavers on the board in the top of the 4th inning when she crushed a home run to left field.
Sara Shea picked up an RBI on a SAC fly in the bottom of the 4th inning to make it 9-1 Huskies.
Christa Allen and Pike each went 1-2 in the game to lead the Beavers. Brianna Benson picked up the loss in the circle, giving up five earned in a ? of an inning. Grace Martin pitched the final 3.2 inning giving up four runs on ten hits.Â
McIntosh, Snyder and Alana DeLisle combined to throw five innings of one-run ball for the Huskies. Snyder recorded the win, her 2nd of the season. Snyder also picked up a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs at the plate for USM. Olivia Levasseur also added to hits for the Huskies.Â

The Beavers travel to Bangor to take on Husson University on Saturday in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
