Beavers Fall on The Road to Thomas College in a Non-Conference Battle

WATERVILLE, Maine - Despite both teams being in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Thursday afternoon's game between the University of Maine at Farmington and Thomas College women's lacrosse teams was a non-conference contest that does not count toward their record in conference play. The Terrier topped the Beavers 18-8 to pick up their 1st win of the season.

The Terriers drew 1st blood just 42 seconds into the game when Sage Brown found the back on the net on the man-advantage. The Beavers responded when Kaya Backman (South Portland, Maine) ripped a shot past Thomas's goalie, Lizzie Gotay to tie the game at one.

Ali Chasse broke the tie, scoring an unassisted marker at the 6:51 mark in the 1st quarter. But the Beavers once again had an answer. Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored her 10th goal of the game. Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) tallied a goal just 57 seconds after McMinis's to give the Beavers their 1st lead of the game.

The Terriers answered with three straight goals spread across the final 3:30 of the 1st quarter and the opening three minutes of the 2nd quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Mary Larochelle, Anna Chadwick, and Chasse knotted the goals for the Terriers.

Backman scored her 2nd goal of the game, an unassisted marker, to bring the Beavers back within a goal with 10 minutes left to play in the 1st half.

Four straight goals from Brown, Chadwich, Larochelle, and Samantha Snow to finish off the 1st half and in the opening moments of the 3rd quarter allowed the Terriers to open up a 9-5 lead. Backman put a halt to Thomas's run when she scored her 3rd goal of the game.

Thomas scored nine of the next 10 goals and took an 18-6 lead. Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) scored for the Beavers during that stretch.

McMinis and Emma Bourget (Gardiner, Maine) added goals in the final four minutes of the game to make it 18-8.

Kate Nowell (York, Maine) made 10 saves in net for the Beavers while Gotay picked up eight saves for Thomas. Emily Stinson (Alfred, Maine) led the Beavers with five ground balls.

Brown and Larochelle each scored four goals to lead the Terriers.
