Beavers Earn Senior Day Split

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington celebrated senior day on Saturday afternoon, having the pleasure of honoring the careers of their three seniors Chelsea Davis (Gray, Maine), Mackenzie Dyer (Hancock, Maine), and Katie Hammer. The Beavers took down Northern Vermont-Lyndon 7-6 in 11 innings in game one before dropping game two 11-3.

Game One

The Hornets struck first putting up four runs in the 2nd inning to open a big lead early. Riann Fortin and Vicky Valentine led off the inning with consecutive singles. Seairra Anderson then hit a ball to short that was thrown away allowing Fortin to score and keep runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Audrey Tembruell dropped a bunt single to load the bases with still nobody out. After a strikeout, Amber Everett and Adriana Lemieux hit back-to-back RBI singles. Saleena Porter hit an RBI single later in the inning to make it 4-0.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) and Taylor Veilleux (Belgrade, Maine) hit consecutive singles with two outs in the bottom of the 2nd to give the Beavers runners on 1st and 3rd. Schievink came in to score on a wild pitch to get the Beavers on the scoreboard. 

Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine) drew a walk with the bases loaded in the 4th inning to pick up an RBI and make it a 4-2 game. Davis followed with a single to right center to make it 4-3.

As she did the inning before, Merritt once again drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game up at four in the bottom of the 5th.

The game remained scoreless into extra innings when Claudia Knapp wrapped a single through the left side to take a 9th inning lead. 

But the Beavers had an answer. After a Schievink SAC bunt, Veilleux hit a single to center to knot the game back up at five. 

After a scoreless 10th, the Hornets took the lead once again on an RBI single from Porter. 

The Beavers once again had an answer as Dyer reach on an error scoring Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) from 2nd to tie the game up a six and give the Beavers another runner in scoring position with nobody out. Schievink dropped down a SAC bunt, allowing Dyer to move up 3rd. Dyer came into score on a passed ball in the ensuing at bat to win the game for the Beavers. 

In the circle, Schievink was masterful for the Beavers. She pitched all 11 innings, throwing 170 pitches, striking out eight, giving up 16 hits and just one earned run. She worked out a pair of bases loaded, nobody out jams in extra innings to give the Beavers the chance to win. She also went 3-4 with a double and three runs scored for the Beavers. 

Everett and Porter each finished 3-6 with an RBI for Lyndon. 

Game Two

The Hornets came out of the gates in game two swinging, scoring seven runs in the first two innings to take a big lead early. Knapp recorded a pair of two-RBI doubles while Fortin added a pair of singles and three RBIs to help spark the offense for Lyndon.

Hammer and Merrit ripped consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the 2nd and were chased home by a Chelsea Davis single to right field. 

Knapp added her 3rd double of the game in the 4th inning, driving in another run to make it 8-2 Hornets. Anderson and Tembruel picked up RBI singles later in the inning to make it 10-2.

The Beavers were able to get one back in the 4th on a SAC fly from Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine), scoring Merritt who had singled to lead off the inning.

Scoreless until the top of the 6th, the Hornets tacked on another un on an RBI single from Tembreull to take an eight run lead. 

Isabella LaFrance (Union, Maine) ripped a pinch-hit one-out double to right center but was stranded there to end the game. 

Merritt, Davis, and Paradis all recorded two hits to lead the Beavers at the plate. Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) picked up the loss, going the first three innings giving up nine runs on eight hits. 

Valentine grabbed the win in the circle for Lyndon, going six innings scattering 11 hits and four walks, while striking out four. Knapp led the offensive attack with three doubles, five RBIs and three runs.

The loss for the Beavers signals the end of their  2023 campaign.
