CANTON, N.Y. - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team wrapped up their 2023 season with an 18-8 loss on the road against SUNY Canton in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) battle.
The Roos got their offense going early and often, scoring just 37 seconds into the game when Lindsey Wunder found the back of the net off a feed from Samantha Dayter. Dayter then converted a free position shot to make it 2-0 just four minutes later.
Kaya Backman (South Portland, Maine) picked up her 21st goal of the season in the final three minutes of the opening quarter to cut the Beaver deficit in half. Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) picked up the assist on Backman's goal.
Dayter added her 2nd goal of the game and her 58th on the season with three seconds left in the quarter to help the Roos take a 3-1 lead into the 2nd quarter. The goal for Dayter was the 1st of a run for the Roos in which they outscored the Beavers 11-1 over a stretch that extended through the 7:49 mark of the 3rd quarter. Maddy Caron and Wunder each scored three goals over the stretch to highlight the run for the Roos.
Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) scored her 12th goal of the season in the 2nd quarter on a feed from Emma Bourget (Gardiner, Maine). The goal from Trefsger made it a 5-2 game at the time.
After the big stretch from SUNY Canton, the Beavers responded with four straight of their own to bring the deficit within seven at 13-6. Four different Beavers scored over the stretch as Emma Brown (Naples, Maine), Trefsger, Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine), and Lauren Girouard (Concord, Vermont) each found the back of the net.
Montgomery, Wunder and Caron each scored over a 2:30 span to push the lead back up to double digits.
McMinis scored a pair of goals in 15 seconds to cut the Roos lead back to eight. But a pair of goals from the Roos in the final minutes turned it into an 18-8 game.
McMinis picked up four points on the afternoon, tallying two goals and two assists while Trefsger added a pair of goals. Kate Nowell (York, Maine) picked up seven saves for the Beavers.
Wunder scored a game-high five goals, Dayter tallied four goals and seven assists, and Caron pitched in with four goals to lead the way for the Roos.
