Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Beavers Top Owls in Overtime, Salvage Weekend Split

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team rebounded after a difficult loss on Friday night to top the host University of Maine at Presque Isle, 92-87 in an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

Junior center Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine) and first-year forward Jason Reynolds were massive all game long for the Beavers and were key cogs in willing the Beavers to the vital victory. Griffin finished with a season-high 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Reynolds finished with a career-high 24 points, knocking down 6-10 from beyond the arc and grabbing eight rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.

Similar to the script from Friday evening, the Beavers jumped out to a quick lead but just as quickly as they built the lead, UMPI found their way back into the game. The Beavers opened the game on an 11-4 run behind threes from Zachary Mickle (Billerica, Mass.) and Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine).

The Beavers stretched their lead out to eight two minutes later after a jumper from Reynolds. But the Owls began to gain their footing, responding with a 9-0 spurt of their own to grab their first lead of the game, 16-15. Griffin and Reynolds each connected from downtown to help the Beavers regain a five-point lead, but that was the largest lead either team had for the remainder of the half.

Following a Saquan Carswell three that cut the Beaver lead to two with just over eight minutes to play, the remainder of the half stayed at a one possession game with neither team leading by more than three.

After going into halftime knotted up at 42, the Beavers scored the first ten points of the half to claim the first double-digit game of the afternoon. The Beavers offense continued to roll as a three from Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.) and a jumper from Anthony on back-to-back possessions opened up a 13-point Beaver lead with 15 minutes to play.

Despite the Beavers looking to have total control of the ballgame, the Owls showed their resiliency for the 2nd consecutive game and would not crumble in the face of adversity. Over the subsequent five minutes, UMPI outscored Farmington, 19-6 to erase the deficit and knot the game up with 10 minutes still to play.

The Beavers bent but did not break. After squandering the 13-point lead they quickly jumped out to a 75-69 lead after Reynolds stayed hot, hitting a pair of threes.

The Owls continued to claw their way back into the ballgame once again. A pair of free throws from Doug McCalla tied the game up at 77 apiece with 2:32 left to play, setting up for a fantastic finish. Griffin hit a layup on the ensuing Beaver possession to give the Beavers the lead once again. After the Beavers forced a miss and turned it over in the final minute, Dany Harris hit a big jumper to tie the game up once again.

On the other end, Mickle got to his right hand to make a straight line drive to the hoop and hit a tough, contested layup to give the Beavers the lead once again. Harris once again had the clutch gene as he delivered his 2nd game tying bucket in the final minute to send the game into overtime.

The overtime period belonged entirely to Reynolds who hit a pair of threes, a layup, and a free throw, scoring nine points to lead the Beavers to their 3rd NAC victory of the season.

Outside of Griffin and Reynolds, three other Beavers finished in double figures. Anthony finished with 16 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Mickle totaled 13 points, five boards, and four assists. Ethan Forrester pitched in with ten points and seven boards.

The Owls were paced by Harris who finished with a game-high 15 points on 11-19 shooting. Jean Mendez finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while McCalla added 12 points for UMPI.
