Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Farmington Falls in Colby Tip-Off Tournament Championship

WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team was unable to keep pace with Colby College's high-powered offense on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Colby Tip-Off Tournament. The Mules defeated the Beavers 90-78, led by 17 three-pointers.

The Records:

Colby improved to 2-0 on the season, having defeated Worcester State on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship game. The Beavers fell to 1-2 after the loss.

How It Happened:

After a highly competitive first 12 minutes of play, with the score tied at 29, the Mules went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game. Marcos Montiel, Savion Stroud, and Dan Civello each knocked down a three-pointer during the run, giving Colby a solid lead.

Farmington quickly responded with an 8-0 run of its own. Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine), who had a strong game throughout, drilled a three and added a transition layup to bring the Beavers back within five points with just under two minutes to play in the half.

Layups from Max Poulton and Jack Lawson gave Colby a 46-37 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Beavers were unable to close the gap as Colby's hot shooting continued, with the Mules stretching their lead to as much as 25 points. After hitting eight three-pointers in the first half, Colby was even more lethal in the second, making 9-of-20 from beyond the arc to seal the victory.

Stroud led the Mules in the second half, scoring 16 of his team-high 21 points, shooting an efficient 3-for-3 from three-point range.

Stats of the Game:

Colby shot 41.6% (32-77) from the field and 47.2% (17-36) from beyond the arc. The Mules also dominated the boards, holding a 52-34 rebounding advantage. Farmington shot 40% (30-75) from the field and 33.3% (11-33) from three-point range.

Leaders - Farmington:

  • Chadbourne led the Beavers with 35 points, including nine three-pointers, just one shy of the UMF program record set by Nathanael Haynie in 2002. Chadbourne also recorded 10 rebounds, posting his first double-double of the season.
  • First-year Zach McLaughlin (Hampden, Maine) also reached double figures, scoring 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting. He added five rebounds and four steals.

Leaders - Colby:

  • Stroud had an outstanding performance, shooting 8-for-9 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from three-point range, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Montiel and Poulton each finished with 18 points. Montiel also added eight assists and six rebounds, while Poulton contributed eight boards.
  • Dan Civello and Jack Gatjanis each chipped in with 11 points off the bench for the Mules.
