Beavers Unable to Overcome First Half Deficit, Fall To Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. - Clinging to a five point lead, Dean College closed out the first half by out scoring the University of Maine at Farmington 27-13 over the final 11 minutes and the Beavers were unable to overcome the 19-point halftime deficit and dropped Saturday afternoon's non-conference battle in Franklin, Mass., 81-76.

The Records:

The Beavers dropped to 1-4 in the early season following the loss while the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten, moving to 5-0.

How it Happened:

The opening minutes of the first half saw fierce back and forth action but with the Bulldogs clinging to a 20-15 advantage with 11:32 left to play, Dean shifted momentum entirely in their favor, going on a 19-0 run as the Beavers were held scoreless for the next six minutes of play, opening up a 24-point advantage.

The Beavers hung tough, cutting the deficit down to 19 heading in halftime. Billy Ray Barnes paced the Bulldogs in the first half, scoring 18 points and grabbing seven boards. Frankie Idlett added ten points in the opening half for Dean.

The tide shifted heavily in favor of Farmington to open up the second half. Zach Mclaughlin (Hampden, Maine) came out of the half scorching, hitting threes on back-to-back possessions. McLaughlin hit a jumper and added a layup to lead the Beavers back into the game, cutting the deficit down to seven in the first five minutes of the second half.

Dean settled in, but Farmington continued to chip away at the lead and even grabbed a lead of their own, their first since the opening minutes of the game, at 58-57 with 7:51 left to play on a pair of free throws from McLaughlin.

The team's traded hoops and Farmington held on to a 64-63 lead with just over five minute to play. A bucket from Frankie Idlett gave Dean the lead a minute later, starting a quick 6-0 spurt to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Dean expanded the lead to as much as eight down the stretch to close out the Beavers on Saturday afternoon.

Stats of the Game:

Farmington shot 46% (29-63) from the floor but just 20% (4-20) from the three-point line. The Bulldogs shot 45.8% (27-59) from the field and 15.4% (2-13) from beyond the arc. Dean held a 43-32 advantage on the boards, the biggest difference between the two teams.
