Farmington Uses a Big Run to Blow Past Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team used a 18-0 run stretching across the the final four minutes of the first half and the opening minute and a half of the second half to turn a three-point deficit into a 15-point lead en route to a 87-73 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Records:

The win for the Beavers is their second of the week, moving to 3-5 overall and a 2-0 record in NAC play. The Mariners moved to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference following the loss.

How it Happened:

Farmington jumped out quickly out of the gates, getting easy buckets against the Mariners 2-3 zone defense. A quick 9-2 run in the opening three and a half minutes of play staked the Beavers to an early advantage.

The Beavers continued to roll, getting easy buckets from Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine), Brock Flagg (Brewer, Maine) and Jason Reynolds (Winslow, Maine), opening up a 17-4 lead and looked to be on their way to a blowout victory.

The Mariners started to settle in however. With Farmington clinging to a 22-9 lead, Maine Maritime responded with an 18-2 run, to their first lead of the game, 27-24. Curt Heinz led the run for the Mariners, accounting for 12 of the 18 points on the Mariners run. 

Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) closed the half on a heater for the Beavers, connecting on three triples to help the Beavers take a 37-27 lead heading into the 2nd half.

Chadbourne drilled his first three of the second half as the Beavers continued to roll offensively, opening up a 42-27 lead to cap off an 18-0 run.

After Maine Maritime cut the lead to 11, Farmington rattled off a 13-4 run highlight by threes from Chadbourne, Patrick McKenney (Newcastle, Maine), and Reynolds to open up a 20-point lead.

The Mariners got within 12, but were unable to draw any closer as Farmington closed out the victory and grabbed their second conference victory of the season.

Stats of the Game:

Farmington picked apart the Mariners zone defense to the tone of 59.6% (24-57) shooting from the field and 50% (13-26) from beyond the arc. Farmington was able to get whatever they wanted offensively, scoring 34 points in the paint. The Mariners shot 43.8% (28-64) from the floor and just 28% (7-25) from deep in the loss.

Leaders - Farmington:
  • Chadbourne led the Beavers offensively hitting nine threes on his way to a team-high 27 points. 
  • Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) and Reynolds each finished with 13 points. Harriman shot 4-for-7 from the floor while Reynolds shot 6-of-10.
  • Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.) chipped in with ten points and five assists in 22 minutes off the bench. 
Leaders - Maine Maritime:
  • Heinz had a monster 32-point, 14-rebound double-double to lead the way for the Mariners.
  • Josiah Dancy chipped in with 16 points and seven assists.
UP NEXT

The Beavers will be back in action on Friday evening at 7:30 PM when they host Fort Kent in a non-conference battle.
