Beavers Hot Streak Continues, Take Two on Day Two

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team continued their strong start to the season, grabbing a pair of wins against St. Joseph's University Long Island and Albright College. 

Game One

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Samantha Lugo delivered an RBI single, bringing in Kate Kiernan who had singled with one out in the inning. Beavers starting pitcher Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) worked out of further damage, retiring the next two hitters with runners at 2nd and 3rd.

The Beavers offense took over in the top of the 3rd. Bri Benson (Woodford, Maine) led of the inning with a walk and came in to score on an RBI triple from first-year Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.). Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) followed with an infield single. Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) then brought in Wrinn with an RBI single to center. The Beavers then executed a perfect double steal with first and third allowing the Beavers to take 3-1 lead. Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) followed with an RBI single as the Beavers opened up a three-run lead.

The Beavers added four more in the top of the 4th. Daigneault delivered an RBI single and came in to score on a passed ball. Wrinn scored on a passed ball and Pike came into score on a groundout from Allen.

After surrendering a run in the bottom of the 2nd, Schievink cruised through the Golden Eagles lineup, keeping them scoreless until the bottom of the 6th. Kiernan delivered an RBI triple and came into score on a single from Lugo. 

The Beavers held on in the 7th, topping the Golden Eagles, 8-3. Schievink finished with a complete game, scattering nine hits and giving up three earned while striking out five. Wrinn, Daigneault, and Allen each recorded two hits to lead the Beavers.

Kiernan took the loss on the mound going two innings and giving up four earned. She did go 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Golden Eagles offense.

Game Two

The Beavers got their offense rolling early in game two. Wrinn led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk and stole 2nd to quickly give the Beavers a runner in scoring position. Daigneault followed with a walk of her own. Wrinn and Daigneault moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on an RBI double from Allen.

The Beavers doubled their lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) opened the inning with a single to center. Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) dropped down a bunt single giving the Beavers 1st and 2nd with one out. Wrinn and Daigneault followed with back-to-back RBI singles making it 4-0 Beavers after two innings.

Farmington tacked on a run in the bottom of the 3rd when Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) who had pinch run for Allen. 

First-year Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was rolling in the circle through the first four innings, giving up just two hits through the first four innings. Albright began to get to Bergen in the top of the 5th scoring a pair of unearned runs, the 2nd coming on a triple from Juliette Licata. Rita Benoit (Farmingdale, Maine) took over with two outs in the 5th and got Heather Pomante to fly out to end the threat.

Albright tacked on three runs in the top of the 6th as Slaydon Fisher delivered a pinch hit two-RBI single and Monica Hernandez delivered an RBI single to knot the game up at five. 

Benoit gave up a two-out triple to Kathryn Baptiste in the top of the 7th inning, but Benoit worked around it to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the 7th. 

Pike reached base to lead off the inning on a hit by pitch and Allen followed with a walk to give the Beavers 1st and 2nd with no one out. Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) and Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) were retired, setting up an all important two-out at bat for Paradis. Paradis put the ball in play, hitting a high chopped to third that ate up the Albright 3rd baseman allowing Pike to score and give the Beavers their 4th win of the season.

Daigneault continued her hot start going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Allen went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. Paradis also went 2-4 to help the Beavers to their best start to the season in recent years. Benoit picked up her first win of the season going 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. 

UP NEXT

The Beavers return to action Thursday with two games. Game one is at 9:00 AM against Clarks Summit and game two is at 1:00 PM against Brevard.
