Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Beavers Unable to Keep Pace with Huskies

GORHAM, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team hung tough against the high-powered University of Southern Maine offensive attack for the opening 10 minutes of the game but the Huskies well-rounded offense was too much, downing the Beavers 19-4 in a non-conference battle on Wednesday afternoon.

Rachel Shanks was a huge part of the Huskies offense, scoring eight goals and making her presence felt right from the opening whistle. Shanks scored her first goal of the game at the 10:19 mark of the 1st quarter to open the scoring. Paige Rinaldi found the back of the net 54 seconds later to double the Huskies lead to 2-0.

The Beavers were able to get on the scoreboard 30 seconds after Rinaldi's goal as sophomore Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) scored her 12th goal of the season to quickly cut the Beavers deficit in half.

Rinaldi found the back of the goal once again at the 7:01 mark of the opening quarter, but Farrar notched her second goal of the quarter just a minute and seven seconds later to make it a one goal game once again.

The Huskies scored four goals over the final 5:03 of the 1st quarter, three of which came from Shanks, to start to pull away and take a 7-2 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

Farrar picked up her hat-trick goal in the opening moments of the 2nd quarter to put a brief hold on the Huskies momentum. But USM's offense was just too much to handle. The Huskies scored the next seven goals stretching from the 11:11 mark of the 2nd quarter until the 5:52 mark of the 3rd quarter to open up a 14-3 lead.

Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season in the 3rd quarter to finish out the scoring for Farmington.

Shanks led the Huskies with her eight goals but two other Huskies scored a hat-trick or more of their own. Rinaldi finished with four goals and an assist while Elaina Hanselmann finished with three goals of her own. Kiaya Gatchell finished with a game-high four assists.

The hat-trick for Farrar is her third of the season. Riley Forrest (Portland, Maine) finished with a team-high three ground balls. Kate Nowell (York, Maine) played the first three quarters in goal, making 10 saves. Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) took over for Nowell in the 4th quarter and picked up three saves.
