Farmington Takes Care of Presque Isle in NAC Play

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team battled back in game one and got ahead and stayed ahead in game two, sweeping today's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at home with the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Game One

The Owls drew first blood, scoring a pair in the top of the 3rd inning. Megan Buchholz reached base on an error to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI trip from Emma McNally. McNally scored on a SAC fly from Kiersten Shade.

The Beavers responded, scoring two of their own in the bottom half of the 3rd. Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) blasted a loud two-run home run to tie the game up at two.

After starting pitcher Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) had a 1-2-3 shutdown inning in the top of the 4th, the Beaver scored two more in the 4th to give Bergen a lead. Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) walked to lead off the inning, moved over to 2nd on a SAC bunt from Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) and scored on a single from Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine). Dow later scored on and RBI groundout from Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine).

Bergen continued to roll in the 5th, setting the Owls down in order once again. The Beavers produced a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the 5th. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, stole 2nd, and scored on an RBI single from Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) to make it a 5-2 game.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) took over in the circle for Bergen to open up the 6th. Schievink was met by Shade who wrapped an infield single to lead off the inning. With two outs, Gracelyn Walsh ripped a clutch two-run home run to make it a one-run game.

Schievink gave up back-to-back singles to lead off the 7th but struck out the following two hitters, and got Shade to fly out to end the game and pick up her 5th save of the season.

Bergen picked up her 7th win of the season.

Game Two

Mayo was in the circle for game two for the Beavers and completely dominated the Owls. The Beavers won the game 8-0 in five innings via mercy rule. Mayo went all five innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out six to pick up her 4th win of the season.

The Beavers got on the board early in the bottom of the 1st inning. Pike started the rally with a two-out single. Allen and Grace Pratt (Thomaston, Maine) each walked to load the bases for Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine). Miller delivered a single on the ground in the 5-6 hole to score a pair and give the Beavers a 2-0 lead after one.

The Beavers doubled their lead, scoring two more in the bottom of the 2nd. Dow and Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After a Wrinn ground out moved the baserunners over to 2nd and 3rd, Daigneault grounded out to 2nd to score Dow. Pike followed with and RBI double to left to score Collins and make it a 4-0 game.

The Beavers offense continued to roll in the bottom of the 3rd. Pratt led off with a single, Miller walked, and Dow ripped an infield single to load the bases for Collins. Collins hit a SAC fly to score Pratt. Wrinn followed with a two-run single into left field and Daigneault ripped a double down the right field line to score Wrinn and make it an 8-0 game.

Mayo was in complete command and did not allow a runner to reach 2nd base in the game.

The Beavers improved to 14-9 on the season and are now 8-2 in NAC play
