Beavers Top Morrisville, Pick up 1st Postseason win Since 2011

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team rebounded in a big way, dispatching SUNY Morrisville in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) loser's bracket game on Friday morning. After suffering a setback at the hands of Thomas College yesterday afternoon, the Beaver offense broke out in a big way, topping the Mustangs 10-2 in six innings.

The Beavers posted a crooked number in every inning except for the 5th en route to their first postseason victory since 2011.

The Mustangs had a golden opportunity to open the scoring, loading the bases with just one away in the top of the 1st inning. But Beavers' first-year starting pitcher Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) had other ideas, striking out Emery Sawitzki and Piper Kaylor to end the inning.

Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk and stole 2nd to put a runner in scoring position right away for Farmington. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) followed with a single, scoring Wrinn and staking the Beavers to an early 1-0 lead. Daigneault scored later in the inning on an RBI from Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine).

Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) and Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) each singled to open up the bottom of the 2nd. Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) executed a perfect SAC bunt to move Paradis and Dow over to 2nd and 3rd with the top of the lineup in Wrinn coming to the plate. Wrinn plated Paradis on a SAC fly to score the Beavers third run of the game. Daigneault followed with her 2nd hit of the game, an infield hit off the pitcher that moved Dow over to 3rd. A perfectly executed 1st and 3rd double steal by Daigneault and Dow gave the Beavers a 4-0 lead through two.

The Beavers offense kept rolling in the 3rd, loading the bases with one down. Dow drew a bases loaded walk to score the fifth run and Collins lifted a SAC fly to score Grace Pratt (Rockland, Maine), extending Farmington's lead to 6-0.

Farmington made the Mustangs pay for a pair of 4th inning errors as Wrinn reached on an error and later scored on a dropped fly ball in right field, that would have been the final out of the inning, off the bat of Allen. Pratt followed with an RBI single of her own, scoring Allen and giving the Beavers a 8-0 lead.

The Mustang offense was stymied by Mayo for the first four innings, but put a crack in the armor in the top of the 5th. An RBI single from Sophie Keehle kept the Mustangs alive, extending the game. Morrisville added a second run in the inning as Callie Lafontaine scored on an RBI groundout from Celeste Baldwin.

After the Farmington bats were sent down in order for the first time in the game and a scoreless inning of relief from Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine), the Beavers needed just two runs in the 6th to end the game via mercy rule. Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) ripped a one-out double to left and was chased home on an Allen double over the head of the center fielder. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) delivered the walk-off hit, a line drive single to right to score Allen from 2nd and clinch the postseason victory for the Beavers.

The Beavers pounded out ten hits in the game, led by Daigneault, Allen, and Miller who all had a pair of hits. The Beavers got contributions from up and down their lineup, as seven different players recorded an RBI in the game.

The Beavers will advance to the next round of the double elimination tournament, playing the winner of SUNY Cobleskill and Thomas at 3:00 PM later this afternoon.
