Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Farmington Unable to Overcome First Half Shooting Woes in 83-74 Loss to Bowdoin

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team was unable to find the range during the first half on Wednesday evening against NESCAC opponent Bowdoin College. The Beavers shot just 22.6% (7-for-31) from the floor in the half, falling behind by 21 going into halftime. The Beavers got as close as seven in the second half, but ended up dropping the contest, 83-74.

The Records:

Following the setback, Farmington moved to 2-2 overall with conference play looming this weekend. Bowdoin picked up their second win of the season, moving to 2-1.

How it Happened:

The first half belonged entirely to the Polar Bears after the first five minutes of the game. Farmington jumped out to a quick 8-4 advantage on the shoulders of three-pointers from Jason Reynolds (Winslow, Maine) and Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine).

The lead was quickly relinquished as Bowdoin responded with a 24-4 run spanning nearly nine minutes of play to open up a 28-12 advantage. The run was sparked by Ray Cuevas and Jackson Bleecker who combined to score 12 of the 24 points for the Polar Bears.

A three-pointer from Braden Camire (Saco, Maine) temporarily halted the run, but Bowdoin continued to control the game with its size and physicality. The Polar Bears held a decisive 28-13 rebounding advantage in the first half and scored 28 of their 41 points in the paint.

Leading 41-20 at halftime, Bowdoin continued its momentum to start the second half. Cuevas scored seven points and Nolan Bessire added a tip-in as the Polar Bears opened on a 9-2 run, building a 28-point lead—their largest of the night.

After a Cuevas three-point play, the game started to shift on the ensuing Farmington possession. Sophomore forward Kory Donlin (Warren, Maine) drilled a three from the left wing and followed by drilling a second from the right corner on the following possession to make it a 22-point game.

A layup by Gabe Michaud (Gorham, Maine) was followed by back-to-back baskets from Bleecker and Adam Bello, ending Farmington's 8-0 burst. But the Beavers continued to battle, as Houghton drained consecutive threes that sparked a 15-4 run. A second Michaud layup capped the stretch, trimming the deficit to 13 with 10:39 remaining.

With the crowd starting to get loud as Farmington crawled their way back into the game, a deep three from Bleecker quickly quieted the crowd to make it 61-45.

The teams continued to jockey with one another, trading blows as Farmington frantically tried to come all the way back. A Reynolds layup was followed by a Camire three-pointer, and two Donlin free throws brought the Beavers within eight—their closest margin since the 7:33 mark of the first half.

As was the case for most of the night, Cuevas had the answer for the Polar Bears. He hit the first of consecutive threes for the Polar Bears as Bowdoin regained a 14-point advantage as Bowdoin tried to put the game out of reach.

The Beavers never quit, cutting the deficit to seven twice in the final two minutes but were never able to get all the way over the hump. Bowdoin got a thunderous dunk from Kevin Reeves and then hit free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
