FARMINGTON, Maine – Sophomore guard Zach McLaughlin (Hampden, Maine) and junior forward Jason Reynolds (Winslow, Maine) led the way for the Beavers, combining to score 52 points as the University of Maine at Farmington breezed past SUNY Delhi, 95-66, on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
The Records:
The Beavers improved to 4-2 following the win and picked up their second conference victory, moving to 2-0. Delhi remains winless, dropping to 0-5 on the young season.
How it Happened:
The first half belonged entirely to McLaughlin, who was on fire from the opening tip. The reigning NAC Player of the Week was hitting shots from all over the floor, scoring the Beavers' first nine points and finishing with 23 in the half.
The opening seven and a half minutes were quick-paced as the two teams traded buckets. A three-point play from Brayden St. Pierre (Readfield, Maine) made it a 21-14 game with 12:28 left to play and appeared to be the energy shift the Beavers needed to start pulling away.
Abdul-Jaleel Ibrahim hit a deep three, and Noah Colin followed with a jumper in the lane as the Broncos pulled within two with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.
Two minutes later, Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) drilled a three from the right corner, sparking the Beavers' decisive run. Including Houghton's three, Farmington closed the half on a 23-9 run, opening up a 47-31 lead. McLaughlin scored ten of the 23 points during the stretch.
Reynolds finished just two points and one rebound shy of a first-half double-double, shooting 2-for-5 from the floor while posting eight points and nine rebounds. Reynolds dominated the second half, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting in just 13 minutes to help Farmington put the game away.
The Beavers scored the first 12 points of the second half, including five from Reynolds, extending the run that dated back to the seven-minute mark of the first half to 35-9. The 11-minute surge put the game out of reach, as the Broncos were never able to get within 24 for the remainder of the contest. Farmington led by as many as 32 in the second half and cruised to their second win in as many days.
