Beavers Drop a Pair on Day 2 in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team was unable to get the bats going in game one and lost a lead late in game two on day two of the FastPitch Dreams Classic. VTSU Castleton took down the Beavers 11-0 in five innings in game one while Minnesota Morris topped the Farmington 8-7 in a back and forth battle.

Game One | 11-0 VTSU Castleton (5 Innings)

Maddie Gould was masterful on the mound for the Spartans, running right through the Beavers lineup to the tune of ten strikeouts while not allowing a single batter to reach base in throwing a five-inning perfect game.

Gould was given an early lead and never looked back as the Spartans avenged their loss to the Beavers from yesterday afternoon. Hitting for herself to lead off the game, Gould singled up the middle and advanced to second as the scooted away from center fielder Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.). Gould was chased around by Alexis Rogers who singled back up the middle as well to take a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game. Samera Rideout followed with a sharp hit double to dead center to score Rogers and make it 2-0.

Sophomore starter Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) worked out of the jam with the help of her defense who turned a double-play to keep the deficit at just two.

Castleton tacked on single runs in the second and third innings. Jordan hill delivered an RBI single in the third and Masson BIllert drove in Taylor Russell with an RBI double in the third.

The Spartan offense cracked the game wide open in the fourth, scoring six runs on eight hits, including five consecutive hits to start the inning. Rogers had an RBI double, Rideout drove in a pair with a single, Abby Hacker added an RBI single, and Hill pitched in with an RBI knock of her own as Castleton took a 10-0 lead through three and a half.

Castleton tacked on an unearned run in the fifth to make it 11-0.

For the game, Castleton out hit the Beavers 17-0 as Gould, Rogers, Rideout, Russell, Makayla Walsh, Hacker, and Hill all had multi hit games. Rideout drove in three while Rogers and Hill each had two RBIs.

Bergen took the loss in the circle for the Beavers, going an inning and third, surrendering three earned on six hits and striking out one. Lisa Truchin (Torrance, Calif.) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up seven earned on ten hits.

Game Two | 8-7 Minnesota Morris

The Cougars got on the board early as Sierra Stevens led off the game with a walk, stole second, moved over to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI groundout from Alyssa Thornton.

The Cougars held onto a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when Malena Mahoney belted a two-run home run to right center to make it 3-0.

After being held scoreless for the first nine innings on Sunday, the Beaver bats broke out in a big way in the top of the fifth. Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) led off the inning with a single and then came in to score two batters later on a pinch-hit RBI single from Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine). After a single from Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine), Daigneault blasted a go-ahead three-run home run to right center to give the Beavers the lead for the first time on the day.

After a shutdown inning in the circle from sophomore starter Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) the Beaver bats got back to work, pushing across two more runs, opening up a three-run lead. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) and Dow recorded RBI knocks in the inning.

Mayo found herself in trouble quickly in the bottom of the sixth. Kendra Schmitz led off the inning with a single and promptly came into score on a double from Mahoney. Ashley Albert followed with a bunt single, putting runners at the corners with nobody out and the go ahead run coming to the plate. After Albert stole second, Mayo got Morgan Wilhelm to strikeout swinging for the first out of the inning. The next batter was Anna Athey who grounded out for the second out of the inning, but Mahoney came into score on the play making it a 6-5 game.

Stevens followed by delivering a clutch two-out RBI triple to tie the game up at six. The next batter was Olivia Losee who gave the Cougars the lead with an RBI double, plating Stevens. Losee then scored on an error as the big inning continued for Minnesota Morris. Mayo induced a ground ball to finally get out of the inning but not before the Cougars took an 8-6 lead.

The Beavers rallied in the top of the 7th as Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) doubled down the line in left field to lead off the inning. She later scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game. Alyssa Thornton slammed the door, closing out the one-run victory for Minnesota Morris.
