MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team struggled offensively on Wednesday, falling in both games of their doubleheader at the FastPitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach.
Game One | Mount Aloysius 4, Farmington 0 (7 Innings)
After the Beavers topped Mount Aloysius 4-0 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Mounties responded with a shutout victory of their own, defeating Farmington 4-0 in Wednesday's opener.
The Mounties struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning as nine batters came to the plate. Sarah Henniger led off with a single and was quickly driven home on a triple by Whitney Cole. Cole later scored on an error, one of two made by the Beavers in the inning. Aisy Myers then plated another run with a two-out single to make it 3-0.
The Mounties maintained their 3-0 lead until the fourth inning when they capitalized on another Farmington error to push across their fourth run. Kendra Gardner led off with a walk and stole second base. Sophie Smith then grounded out to shortstop, but Gardner waited for the throw from Beavers' shortstop Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) before taking off for third. In an attempt to catch Gardner, Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) fired a throw across the diamond, but it bounced away, allowing Gardner to score.
Sierra Walters delivered a dominant performance on the mound for the Mounties, keeping the Farmington offense in check. The Beavers didn't get a runner into scoring position until the fourth inning and were unable to advance a runner to third base.
Farmington's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth. Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) singled and moved to second on a single by Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine), putting runners on first and second with two outs. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine), the hero from Tuesday's walk-off win over SUNY Oswego, pinch-hit for Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) but grounded out to shortstop, ending the threat.
Truchin took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out two. Walters earned her second win of the season, tossing a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts.
Game Two | Stevenson 10, Farmington 2 (5 Innings)
After being shut out in game one, the Beavers' offense got off to a strong start in game two. Wrinn and Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) led off with consecutive walks, putting runners on first and second. Two batters later, Pike singled to score Wrinn, giving Farmington an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore starting pitcher Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) quickly retired the first two batters before running into trouble. Ava Starfursky reached on an error, sparking a two-out rally for the Mustangs. Rebecca Henry, Tessa Boswell, and Danielle Mills each recorded RBI singles to give Stevenson a 4-1 lead after one inning.
The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the third, when another Farmington error extended the inning. Henry delivered a one-out single and later scored on an error by Wrinn.
Farmington chipped away at the deficit in the fourth. With runners on first and third and two outs, Wrinn delivered an RBI single, scoring Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) to cut the lead to 5-2.
Stevenson responded in the bottom half of the inning, adding two runs on RBI singles from Mykaela Getz and Rebecca Maiorano.
Mayo took over in the circle for Bergen in the fifth, trying to keep the deficit at five. However, a pair of singles from Boswell and Caylee Cliett put runners on first and second with one out. Sahara Ward then reached on an error, allowing Boswell to score Stevenson's eighth run. Mayo struggled with control, throwing four wild pitches that allowed Cliett to score and Ward to circle the bases, ending the game via the run rule.
Pike led all Beavers hitters with two hits and an RBI. Bergen took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing seven runs (only three earned) on ten hits.
The Mustangs tallied 12 hits, including a 3-for-3 performance from Boswell and two-hit games from both Maiorano and Henry. Alexis Kirkessner picked up her fourth win of the season, going five innings while allowing six hits and striking out five.
