McMinis and Trefsger Hit 100 Point Mark in Loss at Maine Maritime

Written by: Aaron Goschke '25

CASTINE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team fell behind early and couldn't recover, dropping a 16–7 decision to Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Beavers celebrated individual milestones as Ruby McMinis (Well, Maine) and Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) each recorded their 100th career point. Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) also eclipsed the 100 save mark for the season.

The Records:

In Saturday's afternoon matchup, the Beavers entered at 2–7, coming off a big conference win over Thomas the previous week. Maine Maritime, meanwhile, came in at 8–1 with a perfect 4–0 record both in conference play and at home.

How it Happened:

The game opened with both teams battling for early momentum. Maine Maritime struck first at 12:21 when Lillian Diversi scored, giving the Mariners a quick 1-0 lead. Farmington struggled with early turnovers, allowing the Mariners to stay on the attack. At 11:20, Emilie Crocker (Edgecomb, Maine) answered for the Beavers off a setup by McMinis, tying the game 1-1. However, the Mariners quickly regained the lead at 10:33 as Diversi struck again, assisted by Bella Scolaro, making it 2-1.

After several clears and turnovers on both sides, Farmington responded at 4:16 when McMinis converted a free position shot to tie the game at 2–2. With that goal, Ruby McMinis reached a major milestone, recording her 100th career point with the Beavers. The Mariners applied consistent pressure, and at 3:12, Hazel Stoddard scored to put the Mariners back ahead 3-2. Late in the period, both teams traded shots — including a post hit by Scolaro and key saves by Farmington goalie Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) — but neither side scored again. Strong defensive play, especially between Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) and Hadley Stoddard, closed out the first quarter with the Mariners holding a narrow one-goal advantage.

The second period started with a quick strike from the Mariners, as Scolaro buried a free position shot at 14:52 to extend the lead to 4-2. The Mariners kept the momentum, with Diversi adding another goal at 11:50, assisted by Hazel Stoddard, to make it 5-2. Farmington fought back but was held off the scoreboard by key saves from Ella Bowes. At 7:25, Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) finally broke through for Farmington with a free position goal to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Mariners answered immediately, with Hadley Stoddard scoring a man-up free position goal at 4:38 to make it 633. Despite being down a player after a yellow card, Sadie Harvey (Bethel, Maine) scored a huge man-down goal at 3:01 for Farmington, assisted by McMinis, trimming the deficit to 624. The Mariners continued to capitalize on their chances, as Rebecca Caron scored on a free position shot at 1:39 to give the Mariners a 7-4 lead at the half.

Score at the half:
Maine Maritime 7, Farmington 4

Maine Maritime carried their momentum into the third quarter. Jasmine Anderson scored early off a feed from Diversi to make it 8-4. After a timeout and a series of turnovers, the Mariners kept pressing, with Hazel Stoddard converting another man-up free position shot to extend the lead to 9-4. Diversi and Hadley Stoddard each added goals as Maine Maritime steadily pulled away.

Farmington struggled to maintain possession under pressure, and despite strong efforts from goalie Cotnoir, the Beavers couldn't slow the Mariners' attack. Maine Maritime dominated possession and transition play, building a commanding 11-4 lead heading into the final quarter.

Maine Maritime continued to pile on in the fourth. Hadley Stoddard added a man-up free position goal to push the lead to 12-6, as Farmington struggled to keep pace. The Mariners offense remained relentless, with Emilia Corey and Caitlyn Lamb adding goals to widen the gap even further.

Despite the deficit, Farmington showed some fight. Trefsger scored a man-up goal assisted by Ally Trefsger (South Portland, Maine). With that goal, Abby Trefsger also reached a major milestone, recording the 100th point of her career with the Beavers. Cotnoir made several saves to keep the scoreline respectable, but Maine Maritime's dominance on draws and free position chances sealed the victory.

Final Score:
