Women's Lacrosse Fights Back But Can't Overcome Early Deficit in Loss at Castleton

Written By: Aaron Goshcke '25

CASTLETON, Vermont – The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team fell to Vermont State University Castleton on Monday afternoon, dropping a 14-9 decision in non-conference play.

The Records:

Farmington fell to 2-10 after the loss while the Spartans moved to 5-11 with the victory on Monday.

How it Happened:

The opening quarter was a fast-paced, back-and-forth battle. UMF's defense held strong early, highlighted by a Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) save and a forced turnover from Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine). The Spartans broke through with the first goal of the game, but the Beavers answered quickly. McMinis tied it up off a feed from Lauren Girouard (Concord, Vermont), followed by a goal from Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) to give UMF a 2-1 lead. However, Castleton capitalized on two free-position opportunities, ending the quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 lead..

In the second quarter, the Spartans extended their lead with quick goals from Phoebe Loomis and Gianna Geraci. Despite a strike from Farrar and a free-position goal from McMinis—her 30th of the season—Castleton maintained its momentum. A late goal by Bella Gale capped off a 5-2 quarter in favor of the Spartans, sending UMF into halftime trailing 9-4.

UMF found a spark in the third, outscoring the Spartans 3-2 to close the gap. Farrar added her second of the day, McMinis buried her third, and Ally Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) converted a free-position shot to make it 11-7. The Beavers tightened up defensively as Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) and Farrar contributed key ground balls and caused turnovers to keep Castleton in check.

The fourth quarter began with Farrar and McMinis connecting for another UMF goal, trimming the deficit to three. The Spartans responded with two clutch goals from Megan Ward, one of which came on a free-position shot, while Loomis added a man-up tally off a Geraci assist. Despite strong draw control play from McMinis (10), who finished with the second most draw controls in a game in program history, and a determined effort from the UMF defense, the Beavers couldn't overcome the deficit, and Castleton sealed the 14-9 win in the final minute.

Stats of the Game:

Castleton outshot UMF 35-27 and dominated ground balls 36-21. The Beavers held a slight edge on the draw, winning 15 of 27.

UMF struggled with clears, going just 10-for-26, while Castleton was efficient at 16-for-20. Turnovers also hurt the Beavers, who committed 28 to the Spartans' 22.
