Beavers and Monks Trade Blows in Thrilling Softball Doubleheader

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington and Saint Joseph's College split an exciting softball doubleheader on Tuesday, with UMF winning a dramatic opener, 10-9, and Saint Joseph's responding with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The game one win for Farmington marks their first victory over the Monks since 2005.

Game One | UMF 10, Saint Joseph's 9

Saint Joseph's took early control with a five-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Anna Gilbert. All five of the Monks' runs were of the unearned variety as a pair of Farmington Errors kept the inning alive.

UMF steadily chipped away, with single runs in both the second and third innings on a SAC fly from Katie Morse and an RBI single from Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine). The Beavers were able to finally surge ahead with a five-run fourth inning sparked by Melissa Mayo's (Bridgton, Maine) two-run double. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) delivered an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, tying the game up at six apiece. Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) delivered an RBI groundout  to give Farmington their first lead of the game.

Farmington tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and just one down, Mayo hit a line drive back to the circle that was snared by Rylee Page. Page turned to try to throw out Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) at third base but Page's throw got away, allowing two runs to score, making it a 9-6 game.

The Monks rallied to tie the game up at nine in the sixth behind clutch doubles from Chantelle Bouchard and Sylvia Foley.

Farmington was relentless once again, finding another answer Daigneault became the hero, delivering a walk-off single to left center, scoring Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine), sealing a thrilling 10-9 victory.

In addition to Daigneault's late-game heroics, UMF received key contributions from Mayo and Allen, Mayo finished the game with two hits and two RBIs, and Allen reached safely five times, scoring the winning run. Mayo started in the circle for the Beavers, struggling some with command, giving up eight runs (three earned) and walking five. But she battled through five innings of work and left with a lead. Lisa Truchin (Torrance, Calif.) came on in relief to secure her third win of the season, allowing just one run over the final two innings.

For the Monks, Anna Gilbert and Foley each went three-for-four. Gilbert finished with four RBIs while Foley scored twice and drove in a pair.

Game Two | Saint Joseph's 6, UMF 2

UMF jumped ahead quickly in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-out fielding error that allowed Dow and Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) to come in to score.

Saint Joseph's responded immediately, taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning behind a bases-clearing triple from Sadie Tirrell, making the Beavers pay for a two-out error that would have ended the inning.

The Monks extended their lead with RBI singles from Makayla Quintal and Chantelle Bouchard in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Sylvia Lacombe in the sixth to make it a 6-2 ball game.

Saint Joseph's pitchers Sierra Laukka and Miranda Northrup combined to shut down UMF after the first inning. The Beavers threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth, having second and third with just one out and the tying run at the plate. But a fantastic diving play from Monks' shortstop Charlotte Cloutier kept the ball in the infield. Cloutier then had the wherewithal to throw home and cut down Allen trying to score for the second out of the inning. A fielder's choice ended the threat for Farmington.

In the fifth, Farmington once again threatened to score, having runners at first and second with one out and their three-four hitters due up. But back-to-back pop outs stranded the runners right where they were to end the threat.

Sierra Laukka picked up her first win of the season, and Miranda Northrup pitched 2.2 perfect innings for the save.

The Beavers picked up six hits, two coming off the bat of Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine). Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) took the hardfought loss, going five innings, giving up five runs (two earned) while striking out five.

For the Monks, they were led offensively by Tirrell, Makayla Quintal, and Cloutier who all recorded three hits, Tirrell finished with a triple and three RBIs. Quintal added a double and scored three runs. Cloutier finished just a home run shy of the cycle and scored two runs from the nine-hole.

With the split, Saint Joseph's moves to 14-20 overall, while UMF now stands at 10-12 on the season.
