Storybook Senior Send-Off as UMF Tops Lesley Twice

Written by: Aaron Goschke '25

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team celebrated Senior Day in style on Sunday afternoon, picking up a doubleheader sweep over Lesley University at Prescott Field. The Beavers won the opener 11-8 before cruising to a 10-2 victory in game two.

It was a memorable day for the program, as the Beavers honored their senior class and delivered two strong conference wins in front of their home crowd.

The Records:

Farmington improved to 12-14 overall and 4-2 in NAC play with the sweep, while Lesley fell to 6-22 on the season and 1-5 in the NAC.

How it Happened – Game 1 - UMF 11,

Lesley jumped ahead early in the opener, scoring three runs in the second inning on four hits and capitalizing on a UMF error to build a 3-0 lead. They tacked on another run in the third to extend the advantage to 4-0.

The Beavers answered back in the bottom of the third. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) led off with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, and later scored on a fielder's choice from Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.). Moments later, Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) delivered a two-run inside-the-park homer to right center to make it a one-run game.

Lesley briefly extended their lead with two more runs in the fifth, but UMF erupted for five runs in the bottom half. Daigneault tripled, Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) followed with an RBI triple of her own, and Wrinn, Dow, and Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) all drove in runs to put the Beavers in front.

Lesley tied the game with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth, but UMF responded immediately. Wrinn launched a two-run homer to left to retake the lead, and Pike added an RBI single to pad the advantage. Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) closed out the seventh with a perfect inning to seal the 11-8 victory.

In between game one and two of the doubleheader, the Beavers honored their senior class — Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine), Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine), Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.), Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine), and Isabella LaFrance (Union, Maine) — for their contributions to the program. The group was recognized for their leadership, dedication, and impact on UMF softball both on and off the field.

How it Happened – Game 2 - UMF 10, Lesley 2

Just like in the first game, Lesley scored first, plating two runs in the top of the first. UMF wasted no time responding with a four-run bottom half, stringing together five hits including RBI singles from Dow, Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine), and Isabella LaFrance (Union, Maine).

The Beavers continued to tack on runs throughout the afternoon. Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) tripled and scored on a Dow groundout in the fourth, and RBI hits from Allen and Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) helped stretch the lead to 7-2.

UMF added another run in the fifth when Mayo doubled and later scored during a rundown. In the sixth, Farmington loaded the bases and pushed two more runs across on a Paradis RBI single and a Mayo walk to end the game in mercy rule fashion.

Farmington's pitching and defense locked in, shutting out Lesley over the final five innings while allowing just six total hits. Schievink picked up her second win of the season, tossing six innings and giving up just two runs on six hits and striking out four.

Stats of the Day:

UMF outhit Lesley 25-15 across the two games, racking up nine extra-base hits, including four doubles, three triples, and two home runs.
