WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening on the road against Colby College. The Beavers fell 9-7 in game one and 13-1 in a five-inning game two.
Game One; Colby 9 - Farmington 7
The Beavers wasted no time getting their bats going in the top of the first inning. Ava Paglianite (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) got things started with a hit to left field. Two batters later, Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) singled to right field, putting runners at first and second with just one away. Lisa Truchin (Torrance, Calif.) kept the inning alive, reaching on an error that loaded the bases for the Beavers. Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) worked a walk, bringing in the Beavers' first run of the day. Moments later, Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine), with the bases still loaded and two outs, launched a grand slam off the side of the scoreboard in left field, putting Farmington up 5-0 in the top of the first.
Colby responded in the bottom half of the inning. Carissa Cassidy drew a walk, stole second, and later scored on a throwing error. Farmington starting pitcher Emma DeBoer (Saint Leonard, Md.) prevented further damage, retiring the next three hitters.
Farmington continued to swing the bats well in the second, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to extend the lead to 7-1. Collins reached on a dropped fly ball, and Dow followed with a two-run home run to left-center field.
Colby answered in the bottom of the second as Avery Lyman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Kelsey Sullivan blasted a two-run home run to make it a 7-3 game after two.
Colby continued to chip away in the third and eventually grabbed the lead, scoring five runs on six hits. Juliana Kiley sparked the rally with a single to left field and later scored on an RBI single from Lyman, making it 7-4. Victoria Ramirez, Julia Berry, and Emma Burnham each delivered RBI singles in the inning. Ella Wilcox added a sacrifice fly that scored Berry to give the Mules an 8-7 lead.
Caroline DeSimone provided insurance in the bottom of the fourth, smacking a solo home run over the left-field wall to extend the lead to two.
Farmington applied pressure in the top of the seventh. Collins walked to lead off the inning, and Dow followed with a double, putting runners in scoring position with nobody out. Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) lofted a fly ball to right field, and Collins attempted to score, but a strong throw from DeSimone cut her down at the plate for the second out. Sophia Meade then struck out the next batter to close out the victory for the Mules.
DeBoer and Natalie Simpson (Bucksport, Maine) split time in the circle for the Beavers. DeBoer took the loss, going three innings and allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits. Simpson threw three innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two.
Kathryne Clay earned the win after tossing 1 ? innings of scoreless relief. Meade recorded the save, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out four.
Game Two; Colby 13 - Farmington 1 (5 innings)
After an explosive start in game one, Farmington managed just one hit through the first three innings of game two—a double from Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine)—as Sharlotte Stazinski controlled the Beavers' lineup early.
Colby got things started quickly in the bottom of the first, plating four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Carissa Cassidy led off with a walk and scored on a two-run home run from Wilcox. Lyman added an RBI single, and Kelsey Sullivan delivered an RBI double as the Mules built the early advantage.
Colby broke the game open in the second, scoring six runs to extend the lead to 10-0. DeSimone drove in a pair with a triple to right-center field. Lyman added another RBI single, and Victoria Ramirez capped the inning with a three-run home run to left-center.
Colby continued to add on in the third as Cassidy led off with a home run down the right-field line, making it 11-0.
The Beavers got on the board in the fourth. Dow laced a double into the gap in right-center to put a runner in scoring position. Pike followed with a single up the middle, and a misplay in center field allowed Dow to score.
Kat Xiong delivered an RBI double, and Lauren Valji added an RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth to make it a 13-1 game.
The contest ended after five innings due to the run rule, with Colby securing the 13-1 victory.
Cassidy finished 3-for-3 with a home run to lead Colby, while Stazinski earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

The Beavers will open North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on the road on Saturday with a doubleheader against Lesley University. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
