Men's soccer stumble in second half in loss to Castleton

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. - Castleton State College received three second-half goals from three different players in a 3-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference men's soccer action today at Spartan Stadium.

Farmington (2-3-2 overall, 1-1 in the NAC) is scheduled to host University of Maine at Machias on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Chris Mulholland (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) put the Spartans on the board in the 48th minute of play on an outstanding individual effort. Mulholland gained possession on the left wing, eluded a defender, turning it towards the middle of the field and unleashing a low-liner inside the left post.

Nine minutes later Castleton made it 2-0 as Jacob Ferry (Warwick, R.I.) scored his first goal of the season off a Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.) assist. Costa served a direct kick from 35 yards out, over the wall and onto Ferry's foot who one-touched it home. Costa rounded out the scoring less than 30 seconds later, receiving a through-pass from Billy Lund (Monson, Mass.) and depositing his eighth goal of the season top shelf.

The first half was not without solid scoring chances, and Farmington appeared poised ot take the early advantage. In the fifth minute of play, Jordan Hale (Falmouth, Maine) pounced on a Spartan turnover in the box and found himself alone with Castleton goalie Andy LaCroix. Hale faked low and LaCroix dropped, but the sophomore striker's attempt went ringing off the far post.

Castleton (5-4, 2-0 NAC) also had several solid looks at the cage in the first 45 minutes, but the Beaver defense and goalie Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) proved equal to the task. In the ninth minute Peters came up with a gorgeous save on a low shot by Lund, and turned away Mulholland with a diving stop in the 25th minute.

Peters ended the contest with six saves, while LaCroix turned away two in the shutout.
