Early deficit doesn't deter Beavers, UMF tops Chargers

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- After trailing 1-0 seven minutes into the game, the University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer squad responded with four unanswered goals to earn a 4-1 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in North Atlantic Conference action this afternoon.

The Beavers (4-4 overall, 2-1 NAC) are scheduled to visit New England College Sunday at noon for a NAC contest. The Chargers slipped to 2-7-1 (0-2-1).

Colby-Sawyer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest on a rain soaked Kelsey Field. Clay Allen (Massena, N.Y.) scored his team leading third goal of the season off a nice feed from Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.).

The Beavers evened the game at 1-1 at the 16 minute mark when Jordan Hale (Falmouth, Maine) found the back of the net with his sixth tally of the season. Joc Caldwell (Grafton, Mass) was credited with the assist.

UMF took the advantage in the 25th minute on a goal by Michael Kelly (Norton, Mass.).

The Beavers added one more before the half after Sean Raph (Waterville, Maine) ripped a shot past the Colby-Sawyer keeper. UMF led 3-1 at the break.

With the field conditions worsening, neither team could muster much offense in the second half. Nevertheless, UMF found away to put one more on the board en route to the 4-1 victory. Matt Potter (Waterville, Maine) connected for his first collegiate goal.

Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) allowed one goal and turned away four shots in the win.
Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) had six saves in the loss.
