Huskies claw past UMF in overtime

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) scored 4:37 into overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 1-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference men's soccer action today at Hannaford Field.

The Beavers (6-6) are off until a week from today when they are scheduled to travel to Husson University for a North Atlantic Conference match at 7 p.m. The Huskies improved to 3-10.

In the extra session, the Huskies swung the ball across the field, right to left, to sophomore Justin Lavertue (Rochester, N.H.).  Lavertue played a chip into the middle of the penalty area where Aljari got his head on the ball to knock it over UMF sophomore goalkeeper Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) from about eight yards out for the winning tally.  The goal was the third of the season for Aljari.

Aljari has had the game-winning goal in all three USM wins this season.

Rookie USM goalkeeper Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine) earned the first clean sheet of his collegiate career making two saves.

Peters finished the match, registering five saves.

Southern Maine had a 10-7 advantage in shots, including the only two shots in the overtime, while UMF held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
