Ristow, Beavers knock off NEC

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Luiz Ristow (Joinville, Brazil) scored a goal to give third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington a 1-0 win over No. 6 New England College in North Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Quarterfinal action today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (9-7) advance to take on No. 2 Castleton State College (11-5-2). The Pilgrims finished their season at 7-9-3.

Scoreless through 55 minutes, Ristow blasted a header off a Sean Raph (Waterville, Maine) corner kick at 55:52 for the match's lone score.

Ristow's tally held up as UMF's defense limited NEC to two shots in the second half. The Beavers did not allow a shot on goal over the final 23 minutes of the contest.

UMF's second-half stand was a contrast to the opening 45 minutes as the Pilgrims peppered UMF keeper Derek Reilly (Hollis, N.H.). NEC outshot the Beavers 13-4 in the first half with Reilly making a pair of diving stops and getting help from the post on a Nick Caldwell (Anson, Maine) shot to keep the game scoreless.

After Ristow broke the deadlock, Raph nearly padded the hosts lead when his bid was mishandled and clanged off the post in the 73rd minute, but UMF did not need the insurance as the Beavers held on for the 1-0 quarterfinal win.

Reilly recorded five saves in the victory.

Robert Millard (Barrington, R.I.) stopped seven shots for the Pilgrims, who took seven corner kicks to UMF's five.
