Men's soccer falls to Castleton in regular season closer

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – Castleton State College scored once in each half on its way to a 2-0 North Atlantic Conference win over the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field, earning the number one seed for next weekend's NAC Men's Soccer Tournament.

The top-seeded Spartans (12-3-2, 7-1-1 NAC) will host Lyndon State in a tournament quarterfinal next Sunday, Nov. 3.

UMaine-Farmington (4-12-1, 2-6-1 NAC) enters the tournament as the no. 7 seed, and will travel to Castine, Maine, next Sunday to battle no. 2 seed Maine Maritime Academy.

Sunday's contest was ultimately decided on John Kendall's goal for the Spartans in the 30th minute, off an assist by Drazen Smith. Smith sent a free kick into the 18-yard box, where it caromed off Kendall and over Farmington keeper Derek Reilly into the back of the goal.

Castleton's second goal, in the 71st minute, also came off an indirect kick. This time, P.J. Phillips served up the ball into the 18, where Spencer Dandurand finished with a header directly into the goal.

The Spartans outshot UMaine-Farmington, 16-3, and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Reilly finished the day with four saves in the Beavers' goal, while Spartans keeper Nate Koenemann recorded just one save.
