Men's soccer falls short of the upset at Colby-Sawyer

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Colby-Sawyer College junior Chris DiCecca scored a goal in each half to lift the Chargers men's soccer team to a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington, on a foggy Sunday afternoon at Kelsey Field.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NAC, while the Beavers fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.

DiCecca scored the game's first goal in the 31st minute. The ball was pin-balling between several players in the Beavers' six-yard box when DiCecca was able to get a shot off and score his second goal of the season.

The Chargers took the 1-0 lead into the break after controlling the first half with a 15-2 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corners.

UMaine-Farmington knotted the score early in the second half when sophomore Ibrahim Achekh sent a ball towards the Colby-Sawyer net that the goalie could not handle. The goal was Achekh's team leading third of the season.

The game-winning goal came at 68:21. After Colby-Sawyer earned a corner kick, junior Alex Ortega sent a ball towards the box. The Farmington defense was able to clear the ball, but it went right back to Ortega who served it back in towards the far post. DiCecca was all alone and headed the ball into the net for his second game-winner of the season.

Chargers keeper Nick Austin made three saves in the win, while UMF keeper Ronie Morales kept the Beavers in the game with 15 stops.

Colby-Sawyer finished the game with wide margins of 33-6 in shots and 15-2 in corners.

UMaine-Farmington returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when it hosts Colby College in a game that was originally scheduled for September 22. Wednesday's game will start at 3:30 p.m.
