Southern Maine downs UMF men's hoops in double OT

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – Kyle Pluchino's 3-pointer late in the second overtime coupled with some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch lifted the University of Southern Maine men's basketball team to an 85-75 double overtime win over the University of Maine at Farmington, Tuesday night at Dearborn Gym.

Pluchino's 3-pointer with 1:06 on the clock in 2OT gave Southern Maine (5-4) a 75-72 lead.

UMaine-Farmington (4-4) missed a jumper at the other end of the floor, and the Huskies' Conor Sullivan grabbed the rebound.

The Beavers had to resort to fouling in an effort to stay with the Huskies, but Southern Maine was a perfect 10-of-10 at the stripe over the final 50 seconds of play to hang on for the win.

Farmington junior Pet Sumner sent the game into a second overtime session after draining a 3-pointer with :02 on the clock to tie the game at 68-68.

Southern Maine's Tyler Penney had the heroics at the end of regulation, grabbing the offensive rebound and making a put-back layup at the buzzer off a missed 3-point attempt by Cole Libby.

Pluchino led all scorers with 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including a 6-of-10 mark from 3-point range. He completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, and also dished out five assists.

Penney tallied 18 points, while Sullivan turned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Caddigan came off the bench to score 18 points, including four free throws in the waning seconds of the second overtime.

UMaine-Farmington seniors Andrew Dickey and Nate Carson each finished with 16 points, while Nick Hilton charted 11 points and seven rebounds and Ben Johnson scored 10 ponts.

The Beavers held a seven-point lead, 60-53, as late as the 2:31 mark of the second half, before the Huskies began chipping away at the deficit. A Penney layup followed later by a Caddigan trey set the stage for Penney's layup at the buzzer, while UMaine-Farmington managed just two field goal attempts over the final two minutes of regulation.

UMaine-Farmington heads to Bowdoin College on Friday, Dec. 13, to face the Polar Bears, while USM will battle Salem State on Saturday, Dec. 14, in a non-conference contest.
