Late surge lifts Bowdoin past UMF men's hoops

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College men's basketball team closed the game on a 13-2 run to rally for a 59-53 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Beavers round out their first semester with a record of 4-5, while the Polar Bears close the first semester unbeaten, improving to 9-0 for the first time in school history.

The Beavers were paced by 17 points from senior Andrew Dickey, while senior Nate Carson added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Pet Sumner buried four three-pointers and ended with 16 points in the loss for Farmington.

Bowdoin had four players in double figures, led by 14 points from Keegan Pieri, who also had seven rebounds and four assists. John Swords had 13 points, seven blocks and six rebounds for the Polar Bears while Andrew Madlinger also had 13, including a trio of three-pointers. Matt Mathias scored 12 points and dished out 10 assists for Bowdoin.

Thanks to 10 first-half points from Mathias, Bowdoin carried a 27-19 lead into halftime. The Polar Bears extended their lead to double-digits, 35-24, on a pair of Pieri free throws with 14:56 to go.

From there UMaine-Farmington caught fire, hitting seven three-pointers, including three from Sumner, in a seven-minute span. When senior Garrett Clemmer buried a three-pointer, followed immediately by a Ben Johnson lay-in, the Beavers had opened a 51-46 lead with 5:15 to go.

Bowdoin answered with a decisive game-ending surge, sparked by a pair of Madlinger three-pointers sandwiched around a Grant White trifecta to take a 55-51 advantage with 2:35 remaining.

Sumner cut into the lead with a running lay-in to make it 55-53 with 1:10 remaining. Following a Bowdoin turnover, the Beavers had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Madlinger swiped the ball from Sumner and earned a pair of free throws that pushed the lead back to four points, 57-53 with 25 seconds left.

Farmington held a 37-30 edge in rebounding but turned the ball over 15 times, leading to 19 Bowdoin points. Despite shooting just 37% for the game, the Polar Bears committed just four turnovers.

UMaine-Farmington returns to action on January 7 at NAC rival Thomas College in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. Bowdoin will also return to action on January 7 when it hosts Bridgewater State.
