Box Score BIDDEFORD, ME -- The University of New England Nor'easters controlled the game as they shutout University of Maine Farmington, 3-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 10) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters, who has a current three game win streak on the Beavers, extended their season-opening unbeaten streak to three games in improving to to 2-0-1. The game also marked the season opener for UMF.
UNE did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. First-year Nick Paine (Dartmouth, Mass.) directed a shot toward the UMF goal that was blocked, but teammate Dexter Doucet (Newmarket, N.H.) got the rebound, and kicked a low line drive past Beaver goalie Ronie Morales.
UNE would strike again in the 27th minute to complete the first-half scoring when Matthew Christie capitalized on a Beaver turnover in their defensive box and his shot found its way past the right post.
The Nor'easters increased their lead to 3-0 with less than seven minutes on the clock as junior Will Bushey (South Portland, Maine) converted a free kick from outside the box.
The Beavers could not seem to generate any offense in the game losing both the corner kicks and total shots battle. The Beavers were outshot 23-4 and produced two corner kicks compared to the Nor'easters nine.
Senior goalkeeper Aidan McParland played the first half to earn the win. Junior Nate Diffin relieved McParland and was credited with UNE's only save of the game. Sophomore Ronie Morales came up with nine stops for the Beavers, but falls to 0-1 on the season.
UMaine-Farmington (1-0) will travel to Emerson on Saturday September 13th in their second game of a four game road trip to begin the season. University of New England (2-0-1) will open conference play that same day when they head to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College.
