LAST MEETING
The Monks walked away with a 3-0 victory last year on their home turf after a pair of first half penalty-kick goals from Kyle Shangraw. Shangraw put Saint Joseph's on the scoreboard just 1:44 into the game. The second PK tally of the match occurred in the 34th minute when freshman midfielder Jack Murray was fouled in the box. Called on to take the kick again, Shangraw proceeded to double the Monks' margin with an untouched ball into the right corner of the net.
The Monks scored the final goal of the game and added to their lead just over two minutes later when senior back Joe Murphy (Poland, Maine) scored at the 35:58 mark.
UMF goalie Derek Reilly recorded three saves in the game. The victory gave the Monks a six-game winning streak, tying the longest such streak in team history.
WEEK RECAP
The Beavers played a rare night game at Harold Alfond Stadium on the campus of the University of Maine to face Colby. UMF lost the contest 3-0 after Colby scored two first half goals within a thirty second span.
UMF hosted Daniel Webster College on Saturday for the season's home opener. The Beavers played tough defense, but gave up a late goal as the game ended 1-0.
BOOSTING OFFICE MORALE-S
Goalkeeper Ronie Morales has continued to keep the Beavers in the game, as he is second in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) with 48 saves. He trails Husson's Brian Potter by only six saves as Potter was named the NAC Defensive Player of the Week.
SCOUTING THE MONKS
Saint Joseph's is coming off a 1-0 double-overtime victory in their second conference game of the season. After over 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Monks were awarded a free kick. Junior Nate Fox took the kick and passed wide to Garrett Darnell positioned in the left corner. Darnell crossed the ball low in front of the goal line, where Victor Santos was right there to put the game away.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Monks are led by #15 Austin Bell and #10 Garrett Darnell. The duo leads the team with four points a piece while Bell leads the team in goals (2), Darnell leads the team in assists (2). Saint Joseph's likes to create their own scoring opportunities as four players have taken at least ten shots, including #3 Jack Murray who has taken 20 shots on the year.
UMF may only have one goal on the year so far, but look for Yusuf Yama and Ryan Fairbanks to get the edge. Yama had an opportunity in the contest against Daniel Webster, but the Eagle defense came to the rescue. Yama tried to give the Beavers a lead late in the game but his shot was saved by DWC goalie Sean Hamilton. Fairbanks took a chance in the 18th minute against DWC but the shot sailed wide.
