Men's Soccer Plays Strong, But Falls 2-0 to Saint Joseph's

FARMINGTON, ME – The UMaine-Farmington men's soccer team gave up a pair of goals to Saint Joseph's (ME) in their second to last non-conference game of the season.

The first half saw both teams clawing their way through the opening minutes with scoring chances but not a single conversion. Saint Joseph's freshman forward Austin Bell had a chance to give the Monks an early lead but his header landed in the hands of UMF goalie Ronie Morales.

Beaver defenseman Darine Gnidehoue also had the opportunity to give UMF the lead when a cross came his way, trapped it, but his shot from five yards away as directed at Monks goalie Scott Benner.

Saint Joseph's took the lead in the 44th minute when Nate Fox scored his first goal of the season off a free kick. He set up about 25 yards away and hooked it around the Beaver defense including Morales to find the back of the net.

The second half saw limited action until Victor Santos gave Saint Joseph's an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Yanni Rakis' assist gave Santos a breakaway opportunity and his grounder shot found the right corner of the goal past a diving Morales.

Morales recorded 14 saves, including eight in the second half. Benner recorded two saves in the outing.

UMaine-Farmington (0-5-1) will travel to Vermont this weekend to begin conference play, starting with Green Mountain College on Saturday, September 27th
