Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The No. 2 seeded Castleton University (14-5-1) eliminated the No. 6 seeded University of Maine at Farmington (6-10-3) men's soccer team with a 4-1 win in the North Atlantic Conference semifinal matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans produced four first half goals with Jake Tietgens recording a hat trick. Tietgens scored the first two goals of the contest in the sixth minute and then added a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Blake Hart tallied a goal in the 20th minute with a strike from the left side of the box and then five minutes later, Tietgens notched the Spartans' final score of the contest.
Late in the second half, UMF got on the board with an own goal by Castleton. Luke Dwornik (Newark, Del./ Cab Calloway School of the Arts) tried to send a cross in front of the net, but when a Castleton defender tried to clear the pass, his failed clear attempt deflected off his cleat and rolled into the back of the net.
UMF keeper Matt Wilson (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) recorded four saves in the outing.
UMaine-Farmington ended the season with its highest win total under head coach Tommy DiNuzzo and advanced to the semifinal round for the first time since 2011. The team also scored 32 goals this season, which was the third-most since 2000.
