Box Score CASTLETON, Vt.- University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team(2-9-0,0-4-0) battled but came up short against Castleton University (3-5-2,3-1-0) in a North Atlantic Conference matchup at Spartan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers tried to get on the board within the first few minutes as Nick Marshall (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) sent a ball up-field and wide to Jake Heimlich (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) who fired a shot narrowly missing the goal.
Castleton broke through the UMF defense at 21:49 when Josh Mathews found Jack Kingdon. Kingdon capitalized on a one-versus-one situation to take the 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, Paul Phillips rocketed a shot off the far goal post and into the net with the assist coming from Thomas Kirk.
The Spartans continued the offensive pressure in the second half, in the 50th minute Phillips crossed a lofted ball into the box from the right and Dallas Desroches powered a header past the Beavers goalkeeper Ronie Morales (Houston, Texas, George W. Hewlett). Castleton rounded out the scoring at 62:37 when Nick Kaiafas sent a long ball through to Fidele Rutayisire who finished it in the far post.
Castleton edged UMF in shots 7-4 in the first half with neither team earning a corner kick. For the day, Castleton held a 23-6 shot advantage.
In 82:30 minutes of action for UMF, Morales stopped eight shots, including an impressive foot reaction save in the first half. First-year Michael Pingree (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) made one save in 7:30 minutes. Castleton goalkeepers Dan Palker and Aaron Parker combined minutes and tallied no saves.
UMaine-Farmington will look to clinch their first conference win as they travel to Green Mountain College on Sunday at 2:30pm.
