Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington yielded a goal in the final minute of regulation and fell in overtime to visiting Cazenovia College, 2-1, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Leib Field.
The loss dropped UMaine-Farmington to 7-2-0 overall with the loss, 4-2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference, and was a heartbreaking end to a contest that the Beavers came within 22 seconds of winning.
After a scoreless opening stanza, the Beaver got on the scoreboard in the 49th minute when Aric Belanger tapped home a loose ball inside the six-yard box that had been passed forward by Silas Mohlar off a corner kick.
The Beavers' 1-0 lead held up through the remainder of the second half until the final minute.
Cazenovia's Joaquin Romero put a well-placed cross into the 18-yard box went straight to Brandon Patterson, who found himself in a one-on-one with UMaine-Farmington keeper Jonah Sautter. Patterson beat Sautter with a shot into the left side-netting, knotting the game at 1-1 with 22 seconds left on the game clock.
The Wildcats clinched the win in sudden-victory overtime, with Romero heading Patterson's corner kick attempt into the Beavers' goal just inside the near post in the second minute of the second OT period.
UMaine-Farmington outshot Cazenovia, 26-4, with the Beavers holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sautter finished the day with two saves, while Andrew McLean and Hayden McBath splitting time in the Cazenovia goal and combining for eight saves.
UMaine-Farmington men's soccer returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 10, when it hosts SUNY Polytechnic Institute at 1:30 p.m. at Leib Field.
