CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team traveled to Castine, Maine this afternoon and took down Maine Maritime Academy 1-0 in an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game that had playoff implications.
The Beavers came into Saturday's game with a 2-1 record against NAC East Division teams and holding onto second place in the East. The Mariners came in 1-2 East Division teams and sat in fourth place. The top four teams from each division make the playoffs.
The Beavers were able to grab a lead in just the 14th minute of the contest. After senior Alex Thompson (Auburn, Maine) stole a Mariner clearing pass and pirouetted around his defender, he found fellow senior Yusuf Mohamed (Lewiston, Maine) in the left corner. Mohamed then laid a pass that split two defenders onto the foot of sophomore Zach Chaisson (Scarborough, Maine) who turned to the middle and fired a shot to the upper left corner of the net beating Mariner goalkeeper Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine).
Chaisson's fourth goal of the season would prove to be the game winner and the contest's lone goal. The remainder of the game was evenly played and very defensive minded for each team.
The Beavers held small advantages in shots (6-5) and shots on goal (2-1) while the Mariners held a small advantage in corner kicks (6-5).
Senior goalkeeper Jonah Sautter (Lisbon Falls, Maine) made a single save in recording his fourth shutout of the season. Gray also made one save for the Mariners in the defeat.
