WATERVILLE, Maine - For the second straight game former high school teammates, Coleman Watson (Readfield, Maine) and Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) led the University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team to a win, this time on the road in a crucial North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest against Thomas College by a score of 2-0.
Following today's victory the Beavers have locked up the two seed in the NAC East Division and 3rd overall seed and will play the Terriers once again next Saturday in the first round of the NAC tournament. The game will be played at Husson University after Husson locked up the top overall seed.
After an evenly played first 44 minutes of the first half, Watson tallied his fourth goal of the season with just 59 seconds left. The Beavers had a throw-in deep in their offensive half of the field. The ball was thrown in to sophomore Zach Chaisson (Scarborough, Maine) who took a touch to settle the ball and then lofted a left-footed cross to the back post where Watson was sitting unmarked and was able to head it into the back of the net, giving the Beavers to 1-0 heading into halftime.
Belanger knotted his team leading sixth goal of the season in the 61st minute. The Beavers were awarded a freekick about five yards outside the penalty area. The Terriers set up a four man wall, but it made no difference to Belanger. Belanger sniped a shot over the wall and into the top left corner of the net to double the Beavers lead.
The Beavers would withstand a couple of late chances by the Terriers to complete their sixth shutout of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jonah Sautter (Lisbon Falls, Maine) recorded six saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season. For the Terriers, Jayce Nielsen (Kittery, Maine) and Keein Wright (Burlington-Ontario, Canada) each played a half in net with Nielsen registering the only save.
The Terries held advantages in shots (10-9) and shots on goal (6-3), while the Beavers held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
