BANGOR, Maine - On Saturday afternoon Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer team got past the University of Maine at Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Semifinal contest held at Husson University 2-0.
In the first half, the Beavers and the Mariners played a very even and almost identical half of soccer. The first half saw each team pick up seven shots, including three on net. The game would remain scoreless into halftime.
The Mariners would break the scoreless tie eight minutes and two seconds into the second half when Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) ripped a shot over the head of Beaver's freshman goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) from about 30 yards out. The goal came after the Beavers attempted clear found Stoddard who settled the ball down and laced the top of the net, giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
The Mariners would add an insurance marker in the 80th minute when Kelsey Bern (Castle Rock, Wash.) scored off a feed from Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.). The Mariners sent a cross to the top of the penalty area that was headed forward into the box. The ball was loose for awhile before Magaña was able to corral it, beat her defender and slide a pass into the six yard box where Gonya dove in an effort to intercept the pass. She was unsuccessful and the pass got through to Bern who found the empty net for the two goal advantage.Â
The Beavers were unable to mount substantial pressure in the second half as they did not register a shot on net. For the contest, Gonya made four saves while Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine) tallied three saves for the Mariners.
The loss for the Beavers signals the end of their season as they will finish the year 8-7-3.
