FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington Women's Soccer team opened the floodgates early on Wednesday afternoon at Leib Field as they took down the Fisher College Falcons 6-1 in a non-conference contest.
The Beavers grabbed a lead just two minutes and 34 seconds into the game when junior midfielder Sydney Belanger (Wells, Maine) sniped the bottom left corner off a beautiful feed from junior midfielder Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine). The goal from Belanger was her second of the season and second in as many games.Â
The Beavers were able to double their lead when sophomore forward Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) was looking to cross one into the box in the 19th minute. Her cross sailed over the head of Falcon goalkeeper Olivia Leo (Dunmore, Penn.) but was bending away from the goal. A Falcon defender, in an effort to clean up the loose ball, took the ball off the chest and redirected it into the back of the net giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers grabbed a three goal advantage in the 31st minute when sophomore forward Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) beat Leo to the short side off a great through ball from Belanger.
The Falcons were able to cut into the Beaver lead five minutes later when Ariana Artavia laced one over the head of Beaver junior goalkeeper Lily Souza (Wiscasset, Maine) to make the score 3-1 before halftime.Â
Farmington regained their three goal advantage in the 65th minute. Kate Mohlar (Readfield, Maine) won the ball at midfield for the Beavers off a Leo punt and quickly found Fletcher who lofted a shot over the head of Leo from about 35 yards out. Fletcher's goal was her sixth of the season.Â
Lash tallied the fifth Beaver goal just two minutes later. Lash was able to steal the ball from a Falcon defender who was unable to settle a bouncing ball on the edge of her defensive box, and rifle one over the head of Leo for her second goal of the season.
The Beavers sixth goal game off from a second Falcons own goal that finished off the games scoring.
Souza picked up the win in net for the Beavers, registering a single save in the winning effort. Leo picked up 13 saves in the defeat.
The Beavers held a 24-4 advantage in shots, 19-2 in shots on goal, and 6-0 in corner kicks. Following the win, Farmington improves to 5-5-1 while the Falcons drop to 5-6-1.
