CASTLETON, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team fell to Castleton University on Sunday afternoon in their second game at the Spartan Classic. The Spartans used a big third quarter to put away the Beavers, beating them 71-38.
The Beavers and the Spartans played a fairly even first half as the Spartans took a six point lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Spartans outscored the Beavers 29-5 to push their six point halftime lead to 30. The Spartans shot 10-22 and grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the quarter that led to ten second chance points.
Freshman guard Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) tallied a team-high 13 points for the Beavers. Dwyer also added an assist and two steals. For the weekend, Dwyer scored 20 points, added seven steals, and was named to the All-Tournament team.Â
Sophomore forward Jalyn Stacy (West Baldwin, Maine) scored seven points and snagged ten rebounds while adding three blocks for the Beavers. Senior forward Rosalie White (Lisbon, Maine) chipped in six points and four boards while junior guard Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.Â
For the Spartans, they were led by Liz Bailey (West Rutland, Vermont) who tallied a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Elise Magro (Rutland, Vermont) chipped in 12 points, Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J.) added 11, and Gwynn Tatton (Rehoboth, Mass.) tallied ten.
The Spartans forced 23 Beaver turnovers that led to 29 points. The Spartans also held a 47-40 advantage in rebounds, while also holding a 16-4 advantage in second chance points.
