Beavers Take Down Falcons on Day One of Beaver Classic

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team took down Fisher College on Friday evening in game one of the Beaver Classic tournament 47-39.

Both teams struggled shooting all night, but the Beavers hit some clutch shots down the stretch to close out the Falcons and grab their first win of the season.

The Falcons grabbed the lead early, starting the game on a 6-0 run as the Beavers missed their first nine shots from the field. The Beavers would quickly find their footing in the first quarter, finishing the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 12-8 lead into the first intermission.

The Beavers were able to up their lead to 11 at half behind eight points from Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine). Stevens hit a pair of threes in the first quarter to help get the Beavers offense going.

The Beavers went cold to start the second half, registering six points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Falcons would cut the Beavers lead to one at 33-32. The Beavers respond by finishing the game on a 14-7 run to close out the Falcons.

After a pair of free throw from Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine), freshman guard Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) hit her first shot and maybe the biggest shot of the night, a walk in three from the top of the key to give the Beavers a six point lead and help to separate themselves from the Falcons.

The Beavers were able to control the boards this evening, holding a 62-48 rebound advantage including grabbing 21 offensive rebounds. Jalyn Stacy (West Baldwin, Maine) and Garand each grabbed 12 rebounds, while Dwyer snagged 10.

Offensively, the Beavers had six players contribute at least six points, led by Stevens' 10. Stacy pitched in eight, Garand six, Dwyer six, Rosalie White (Lisbon, Maine) six off the bench, and Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) pitched in seven off the Bench for the Beavers.

The Falcons were paced by Naomi Mares (Pueblo, Colo.) who finished with 18 points.
