BIDDEFORD, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington and the University of New England battled to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest in Biddeford on Wednesday afternoon. Following the tie, the Beavers record sits at 0-2-1 while the Nor'easters now stands at 0-4-2.
The teams played a scoreless, evenly played first half before UNE junior Alex Woodworth (Pittsburgh, PA.) slotted one into the back of the net breaking the tie just three minutes and five seconds into the second half. Junior Luke Gould (Exeter, N.H.) notched the assist on Woodworth's goal.
The Beavers fought their way back to tie the game 20 minutes later after a foul was called just inside midfield setting up a UMF free kick. Freshman defender Maxon Brochu (Bath, Maine) took the kick and lofted the ball into the penalty box where it found senior midfielder Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine), Belanger settled the ball down before ripping a shot that beat UNE goalkeeper Sean McCarthy (Exeter, N.H.). The goal from Belanger was his first of the year.
The Beavers continued to up their pressure following the tying tally as they out shot the Nor'easter 6-2 over the last 20 minutes of the contest. McCarthy was up to the challenge however, as he denied four Beaver chances at taking the lead.
For the game, UNE held a 15-13 advantage in shots while UMF held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. UNE had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Jonah Sautter (Lisbon, Maine) registered two saves, including one to preserve the tie in the 73rd minute. McCarthy tallied six saves for the Nor'easters.
